The John Lyon School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

The John Lyon School is academically selective and potential and achievement in at least one major academic area are expected of all successful applicants. The admissions process will evaluate your child academically but is also concerned with their character and attitude.

Offers are made on the basis of successful performance in the examinations, interviews and group activities, as well as a positive reference from your child’s current school. Candidates who sit entrance tests are automatically considered for an academic scholarship.

The John Lyon School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

Each year, the school offers a small number of means-tested bursaries to pupils who demonstrate exceptional talent and potential. The deadline for bursary applications is in November of the year preceding entry.

For more information and to request a ‘Confidential Statement of Income’ application form, please contact the Registrar.

Academic Scholarships are awarded based on your child’s performance in the examination, their school report and their interview. Scholarships are also available for Music, Drama, STEAM, Sports and Art, and application forms for these are available to download on the school’s website.

Please note that all academic and non-academic awards normally cover 5% of tuition fees per year, but can likely be coupled with a means-tested bursary to provide further support.

The John Lyon School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

The John Lyon School 11+ entrance exam consists of the following assessments:

  • English (60 mins)
  • Mathematics (no calculators, 60 mins)
  • Group activity and interview (120 mins)

The English paper assesses your child’s comprehension and writing skills, with a focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar. The test aims to identify pupils who are confident with language and in their reading, comprehension and writing.

The maths paper tests problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills and requires knowledge of all topics from the Mathematics Key Stage 2 National Curriculum. Via this assessment, the school hopes to identify pupils who can develop clear and concise solutions rather than just reach the correct answer.

Your child will also take part in a series of group activities, which assess how they respond to different problems and how they work in practical circumstances. They help judge the ‘teachability’ of potential Lyonians and their capacity to contribute to the school’s community.

Furthermore, all applicants are interviewed by an academic member of the Senior Team. Your child will be asked to talk about a topic, which may be academic, based on current affairs or similar.
