The John Lyon School 11+ (11 Plus) Admissions
The John Lyon School is academically selective and potential and achievement in at least one major academic area are expected of all successful applicants.
The admissions process will evaluate your son academically, but is also concerned with his character and attitude as well.
Offers are made on the basis of successful performance in the examinations, interviews and group activities, as well as a positive reference from your son’s current school. Boys who sit entrance tests are automatically considered for an academic scholarship.
Each year, the school offers a small number of means-tested bursaries to pupils who demonstrate exceptional talent and potential. The deadline for bursary applications is in October of the school year prior to Year 7 entry.
For more information and to request a ‘Confidential Statement of Income’ application form, please contact Registrar Rebecca Davies.
The Academic Scholarships are awarded based on your son’s performance in the examination, their school report and their interview. Scholarships are also available for Music, Drama and Sport.
Scholarships normally cover 5% of tuition fees per year. Music, Drama and Sport Scholarship application forms are available to download on the school’s website or can be requested from the Admissions Office.
The John Lyon School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The John Lyon School 11+ entrance assessment consists of the following papers:
- English (60 mins)
- Mathematics (no calculators, 60 mins)
- Group activity and interview (120 mins)
The English paper assesses your son’s comprehension and writing skills, with a focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar. The test aims to identify pupils who are confident with language and in their reading, comprehension and writing.
The maths paper tests problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills and requires knowledge of all topics from the Mathematics Key Stage 2 National Curriculum. Via this assessment, the school hopes to identify pupils who can develop clear and concise solutions rather than just reach the correct answer.
Your son will also take part in a series of group activities, which assess how boys respond to different problems and how they work in practical circumstances. They help judge the ‘teachability’ of potential Lyonians and their capacity to contribute to the school’s community.
Furthermore, all applicants are interviewed by an academic member of the Senior Team. Your son will be asked to talk about a topic, which may be academic, based on current affairs or similar. The interview assists the school in getting to know him better whilst he discusses his interests and aspirations.
