Introduction

Stonyhurst College is a coeducational independent school in Lancashire. Founded in 1593, the school occupies a Grade I listed building and follows the Jesuit tradition.

The Stonyhurst Prep (St Mary’s Hall) curriculum is rich and varied, ensuring that pupils are academically challenged. Besides the core subjects, Year 7 pupils have the opportunity to choose from several languages (French, Spanish, German and Latin).

Numerous exciting after-class activities take place in the school’s many new and refurbished facilities. St. Mary’s Hall owns a fully-equipped sports hall, outside tennis and netball courts, rugby, cricket, rounders & athletics fields, a water-based Astroturf pitch, a heated indoor swimming pool and a 9-hole golf course.

With emphasis on both prayer and service, Roman Catholicism is central to school life, however, pupils of other faiths, and those with none at all, are also considered a vital part of the school’s community. Stonyhurst alumni include a Peruvian president, a Bolivian president, a New Zealand prime minister, a signatory of the American Declaration of Independence and a number of writers, sportsmen and politicians.

In line with the motto As much as I can, the school prepares children for an adulthood in which they will use their talents, knowledge and skills to improve the world around them.

The admissions process includes an online entrance assessment. Entry is also subject to your child’s current-school reports from the previous two years, a reference, completion of a personal information sheet and an interview with the Headmaster.

The school assesses each applicant on the basis of merit, however, if a decision must be made between two or more candidates who meet admission requirements, a preference will be given to:

  •  A child who has a sibling in the school or whose parent(s) attended Stonyhurst;
  •  A child who is a practising Catholic or comes from a family of practising Catholics;
  •  A child applying to join as a boarder rather than a day pupil;
  •  A child that demonstrates a particular skill, talent or aptitude.

Stonyhurst St. Mary’s Hall 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

The school offers fee support (bursaries) to pupils who are likely to benefit from a Stonyhurst education, but whose parents cannot afford full fees. They are means-tested. If you wish to apply for a bursary, you should make an application for fee support and address it to the Bursar. For more details, please reach out to the school.

If you wish to apply for a scholarship, you should be registered for a place at Stonyhurst first. Your child will then be invited to attend examinations and other assessments on the strength of school and other reports. Academic, Music and Sports Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and the value of the scholarship award is decided by the Head.

The St Francis Xavier Awards are available to pupils aged 11+. Successful candidates receive a 20% fee remission, which, if combined with a bursary, may cover up to 100% of the fees. Assessments for the St Francis Xavier awards take place in January. For more information, please refer to the school.
