Table of Contents
St. Swithun’s School is an independent day and boarding school for girls in Winchester, Hampshire. It was founded in 1884 by Miss Anna Bramston, daughter of the Dean of Winchester, with the aim of educating “daughters of worthy citizens of Winchester”.
Girls in Senior School study art, biology, chemistry, classics and classical civilisation, computing, design and technology, digital learning, drama and theatre studies, economics, English, food and textiles, geography, government and politics, history, history of art, IT, learning support, mathematics, MFL, music, physics, religion, philosophy and ethics, psychology and sport.
The broad curriculum is in perfect blend with after-class activities, which range from music, drama and sports (such as Polo club, scuba diving, karate and fencing) to sessions across a range of subjects such as biology, maths, chemistry, linguistics and debating.
Although the school sets high academic standards, it also nurtures a low-pressure environment in which girls are encouraged to do their own personal best rather than compete with peers. The vibrant Swithun’s community consists of genuinely kind students, who act in line with the motto Charity, Humility, Sincerity and enjoy their individuality as they simultaneously seek ways to collaborate and learn from others.

St. Swithun’s School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
The admissions process starts with registration. You will be expected to complete and return the registration form and pay a non-returnable registration fee of £200.
Entry at 11+ for external applicants is by means of the Common Entrance examination taken in January of Year 6. It is a qualifying rather than a competitive examination. A current-school report will also be requested.
Common Entrance is preceded by a Pretest taken in the Autumn term prior to entry for 11+. Depending on the result of the Pretest, your daughter may receive an offer of a place, conditional on achieving at least 60% overall at Common Entrance.
To accept the offer of a place, you will be expected to pay a deposit of £1000 (£500 of this will be offset against the first term’s fees, the remaining £500 will be refunded in your daughter’s final term).
The school offers academic scholarships at 11+, which hold a value of up to 20% of the fees and are awarded at the discretion of the scholarship awards committee. Candidates are selected on the basis of their results in the Common Entrance examinations and an interview.
Scholarships at 11+ are awarded in Music and Sport, as well.
Means-tested awards cover up to 100% of tuition fees and are offered to girls who meet the school’s entrance criteria and whose applications were submitted by the end of September in the year prior to entry. In rare cases, applications may be considered outside this timescale.
A means-tested award will be valid for the duration of your daughter’s time at the school. It is, however, conditional on satisfactory educational progress and an annual financial review. For more information, please contact the school.
