Introduction
St. Edmund’s School, Canterbury is an independent day and boarding school located in Canterbury, Kent. Established in 1749, the school aimed to provide a free education for the fatherless sons of the clergy.
Year 7 pupils study art, computer science, English, geography, history, drama, Latin, mathematics, MFL, music, PSHEE, religious studies, science, physical education and DT.
The co-curricular programme offers over 30 clubs and activities, including choir, Minecraft, computer coding, musical theatre, cup stacking, chess, creative writing, cricket, hockey and netball, along with Forest School activities within the outdoor education programme.

To get a flavour of what a St. Edmund’s education can offer, the school recommends that you and your child attend Open Morning. The event includes a talk from the Head, a pupil-led tour of the extensive facilities and beautiful grounds, a meeting with teaching staff and a showcase of activities. You can register your child for entry to St. Edmund’s Junior School at any time before or after the visit. Registration comprises completing and returning a registration form together with a non-refundable £150 registration fee.
Your child’s name will then be added to the provisional list for entry and they will be invited to sit formal entrance tests (in January) and attend an interview. A current school report will also be requested.
If your child meets the school’s criteria, the Head will make a formal offer of a place and send it along with a Parent Contract and joining instructions. To accept the place, you should respond in writing, complete the joining instructions, accept the school’s terms and conditions and pay a £750 deposit, refundable in your child’s final term at the school.
St. Edmund’s School, Canterbury, 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, demonstrated in competitive examinations and assessments. Scholars are expected to contribute to the community and set high standards of conduct. Awards are offered in the categories of Academic ability, Art, Drama, Music, Dance and Sport. Annual means-tested bursaries can supplement a scholarship.
St. Edmund’s offers a 25% discount on fees to sons and daughters of the clergy. The same discount may be offered to employees of the Dean & Chapter at Canterbury Cathedral.
Children of former pupils may be entitled to a tuition fee discount of up to a maximum of 10%, whilst members of the Armed Forces receive remission of 10% of boarding fees. The school also offers sibling discounts (for third and subsequent children of the same family in the school at the same time).
There is a limited means-tested bursary provision for families who are new to St. Edmund’s. Please note that bursaries are awarded following a thorough evaluation of your financial cincumstances, including gross income, assets, liabilities, etc. Applications should be made to the Bursar.

The St. Edmund’s School 11+ exam consists of the following papers:
- Verbal Reasoning
- Non-Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess your child’s logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper measures their ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
