Introduction

Founded in 1862, St, Clement Danes School is a co-educational, partially selective academy based in the Hertfordshire village of Chorleywood. Rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the school educates over 1,500 pupils aged 11-18 in line with the motto Loyauté m’oblige (Loyalty binds me). [1]

The curriculum is characterised by both breadth and depth, allowing students to acquire lasting competency in humanities, sciences, mathematics and social sciences. Learning is both fun and challenging, supported by effective teaching that aims to develop pupils’ intellectual resilience.

Beyond the classroom, the cohort enthusiastically participates in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, an initiative that helps boost pupils’ self-discovery and social growth through volunteering and expeditions. Additionally, the programme allows students to compete in diving, canoeing, wrestling, Judo, water polo, climbing and many other sporting activities, aimed at maximising their physical development and stamina. [2]

Besides offering a varied range of extracurriculars, the school is committed to providing high quality pastoral care and also has an active wellbeing programme, focusing on building students’ adaptability and mental strength. [3]

Generally speaking, St. Clement Danes School is steeped in rich tradition and history, but is also characterised by continual innovation and progress. The school’s robust foundations have enabled it to remain flexible in the face of change, successfully meeting the evolving needs of its diverse community.

A pursuit of excellence defines the St. Clement Danes ethos, alongside the commitment to ongoing, sustained improvement. Through reflection, diligent research and critical evaluation, staff are dedicated to ensuring that the educational practices are up-to-date and as relevant as possible, moulding pupils into independent and agile thinkers in the process.

Recently, a total of 56% of students achieved grades 9-7 or A*- A. Such strong examination results are a testament to both the school’s successful educational philosophy and effective governance.
