Sir William Perkin’s School 11 Plus (11+) Entrance Exam Information

Sir William Perkin’s School (SWPS) is an independent day school for girls aged 11–18. It takes its name from the wealthy merchant who founded the school in 1725 to provide an education for children of Chertsey, an ancient market town in the Runnymede borough of Surrey. The school moved to its present site on Guildford Road in Chertsey 1819 and became fully independent in 1978.

Although SWPS has occupied its present green-belt site for nearly 200 years, an ongoing programme of development means that it has some excellent, purpose-built modern facilities. These include a sports centre and boat club, with fitness, dance and rowing studios, and fully-equipped, dedicated spaces for art and design, ICT, science, languages and the performing arts.

The school offers a broad curriculum and focuses on academic success. However, it also encourages students to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities to help develop other life skills, such as teamwork and leadership.

Sir William Perkin’s School 11 Plus Admissions

Sir William Perkin’s School has four tutor groups in Year 7, and admits around 96 girls at 11+ to fill these forms. Selection is based on a report for each candidate’s current school and performance in an entrance exam, which consists of papers in maths and English.

The school also invites some candidates for interview, to help with the decision-making process if their exam results were inconclusive or if they are being considered for an academic scholarship.

A limited number of means-tested Foundation Bursaries are available and can provide financial assistance for up to 100% of the fees.

All candidates sitting the entrance exam are considered for academic scholarships, with the top-performers being invited back for scholarship interviews. In Year 7, scholarships are also awarded for art, drama and music. Application forms are available from the school’s admissions department.

How to Apply for 11 Plus Entry to Sir William Perkin’s School

Parents are encouraged to visit Sir William Perkin’s School before registering their daughter for a place. The school holds open evenings and information mornings, plus workshops and taster days for prospective students in Years 4 and 5, throughout the year. Details of forthcoming open events are published on the school’s website and places can be booked online.

Parents who would like their daughter to be considered and assessed for entry into Year 7 (11+) should complete the Registration Form.  This must be returned to the school via the website or by mail, along with the non-returnable registration fee of £100, by the end of October in the year preceding entry (while the applicant is in Year 6).

It is worth visiting the school and registering well ahead of the deadline, as registered candidates will be sent advanced invitations to relevant events, such as the taster days.

An application pack, which includes details of exam day and information relating to bursaries and scholarships, is sent to all registered candidates in mid-November and the exam is held in January.

Offers of places are usually sent out by the end of January and the school provides opportunities for successful candidates to revisit the school before deciding whether to accept their place by the deadline in March.
