Introduction

Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School is a co-educational establishment founded in 1963 and located in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Although it might be younger than other schools, the school has invested heavily in developing a modern and innovative school programme that provides its pupils with the technological knowledge they need to navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

The curriculum at Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School is broad and challenging during all key stages, extending far beyond the national curriculum. Pupils cover main subjects such as physics, English, chemistry, and mathematics, but also have the opportunity to learn graphic design, food science, philosophy, and ethics.

Regarding extra-curricular activities, the school believes that overall educational well-being is much more than just grades. Many clubs and activities are available that pupils can partake in, including an advanced tech club, performing arts clubs, food science club, feminist society, and many more, etc.

The school works hard to empower visionaries of the future and sees itself as a pioneer in this modern educational approach. The school’s diverse and inclusive environment gives pupils a unique opportunity to engage in academic exchanges and enhance their emotional intelligence. It takes great pride in its strong sense of community and profoundly appreciates the exemplary conduct and attitudes of pupils.

Considering how much the school invests in its educational plan and innovative technologies, it’s no surprise that its pupils regularly show remarkable results, which Ofsted reports as “Outstanding”. [1]

Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Admission to Year 7 at Sir Henry Floyd is determined by student performance in the 11+ Exam known as the Secondary Transfer Test, which is designed to select students based on academic ability. Created by GL Assessment, the 11 Plus Secondary Transfer Test is administered by Buckinghamshire County Council as part of its Coordinated Admissions Scheme.

The school holds regular Open Evenings/Mornings throughout the year for prospective families. These include a presentation from the Head and a tour of the facilities. To book a place at one of the open events, please visit this page.

The school often receives more successful applications than there are available places. In such cases, the following oversubscription criteria are used, giving priority to:

  • Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children
  • Pupils who qualify for a Pupil Premium grant
  • Students who already have a brother or sister at the school
  • Children of Sir Henry Floyd Grammar’s staff
  • Students who live within the school’s catchment area
  • Pupils who live closest to the school

Sir Henry Floyd has a waiting list where pupils are ranked again in accordance with the school’s oversubscription criteria. If you decide to decline an offer of a place, you will have the opportunity to re-join the waiting list upon request.

Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School’s full admissions policy is available to download from their website. You can view the school’s exact location on the map below:

Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) STT Exam Format

The exam board for the 11+ Test in Buckinghamshire is GL Assessment. The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test is split into two papers that test:

  1. Comprehension, technical English and Verbal Reasoning
  2. Non-Verbal Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Mathematics

Each test paper lasts for approximately 45 minutes, and all questions are multiple-choice. The 11+ Secondary Transfer Test is weighted as follows:

  • Verbal Ability – 50%
  • Non-Verbal Ability – 25%
  • Numerical Ability – 25%

All questions are answered on a separate answer sheet, with each correct answer gaining one raw age-standardised mark.

Before taking the Secondary Transfer Test, students will have the opportunity to take a Practice Test. The Practice Test aims to give students the experience of taking a test under exam conditions and to help familiarise them with the layout of the 11+ STT.
