Introduction
Shrewsbury High School is an independent day school for girls in Shropshire. Founded in 1885, it is the best performing girls’ school in Shropshire at A-level and an original member of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST). [1]
Girls take lessons in art & design, biology, chemistry, computing & ICT, drama, economics & business, English, MFL, geography, history, Latin, mathematics, music, physics, physical education, philosophy & ethics and religious studies.
With over 70 activities on offer, the school actively invests in enriching the curriculum and helping girls build firm friendships. Clubs range from LAMDA, Book Club, Eco Club and Choir, to Dance Choreography, Art Club, Swimming and Ballet.
Shrewsbury High also organises expeditions to far-off areas of the world, including India’s Old Delhi, the Himalayas, South America, and all the way to the deserts and savannas in Africa.

Shrewsbury High School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
To apply for a place in Year 7, you should complete the application form and pay the £100 non-refundable registration fee. Admission is through entrance exams and interviews, taking place in January of the calendar year of entry.
Please note that, on acceptance of a place, a £500 deposit is payable. This fee will be refunded to you at the end of your child’s career at Shrewsbury High.
Shrewsbury High School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Bursaries and scholarships are available to applicants for entry into Senior School. Bursaries are typically awarded to pupils in the top 30% of performance in the 11+ exam. They are means-tested and can range from 30-100% of fees.
The school awards Academic Scholarships on the basis of successful performance in the entrance exam. There are also Art, Music, Drama and Sport Scholarships, offered following successful auditions/trials. Please note that scholarships and bursaries may be withdrawn at the discretion of the Head, if the recipient’s conduct or work has proven to be unsatisfactory.
Shrewsbury High School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Shrewsbury High School 11+ exam consists of the following assessments:
- English
- Mathematics
- Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4)
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your daughter’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The CAT4 is an online exam that aims to examine developed abilities via modules testing Verbal, Non-Verbal, Spatial and Quantitative Reasoning.
