Introduction

Epsom College is an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 11-18. Founded in 1851, it was originally called The Medical Benevolent College and was established to support medical families in the days when doctors were poorly paid and likely to die of illnesses they encountered. Children of impoverished medical families were educated, widowed families were financially supported and older members of the medical community were given a place to live. In 1910, The Medical Benevolent College was renamed Epsom College.

Academically, Epsom College is superb. According to the Department for Education’s recent league tables, Epsom College is in the top 1% nationally for results in public exams. In the Lower School (Years 7 and 8), pupils study a wide range of subjects, including two modern languages, Latin, drama, music and computer science.

The co-curricular programme at Epsom College is so outstanding that it has won awards. There are over 150 activities available to pupils some they will take up from choice and others will be on their timetable. This dual approach means students can pursue their passions while also being pushed out of their comfort zones to try new things.

The Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools awarded Epsom College Gold status for its exemplary pastoral care. All staff are trained in mental health first aid, and mindfulness is a part of school life. In addition to this, two school counsellors offer 1:1 sessions to pupils who need support.

Epsom College: Admissions Process for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry

Visiting Epsom College is a great way to find out more about the school. You can attend an Open Morning or book yourself onto a College Tour. An Open Morning, taking place on a Saturday, will enable you to explore the facilities, ask any questions you have and listen to a talk given by the Head. A College Tour will enable you to see the school on a normal working morning.

If you decide to apply for a place for your child for Year 7 entry, you will need to fill out the online application form before the end of October of Year 6. On this form, you will need to tell Epsom College about your child’s interests and achievements, helping the College to decide if your child is a good fit for the school. You will also need to pay the £200 registration fee (£300 for overseas applicants).

Your child will then need to take the ISEB Common Pre-test before 1st December of Year 6. This can be taken at their current school. If this is not possible, alternative arrangements can be made. Epsom College will send you information about the test once you have submitted your application form.

Please note that a reference from your child’s current school will also be reviewed as part of the admissions process.

Mid-December of Year 6, you will find out if your child has been invited to an Engagement Day in January at the College. 500 candidates will be invited to attend this half-day session. Candidates will be chosen based on their performance in the ISEB Pre-test, the quality of their school reference and the information provided about them on their application form. Engagement Day is a chance for staff to get to know your child and assess whether they will thrive at Epsom College.

Offers of places will be made in mid-February. You will need to accept any offer within a month of it being made and pay the £4,000 confirmation deposit. £2,000 of this deposit is offset against the first term’s fees, and the other £2,000 is offset against the fees of your child’s last term at the College.

Epsom College: Scholarships and Bursaries

The following scholarships are available for Year 7 entry: academic, music, drama and sport. There are no additional exams for academic scholarships; these are awarded based on performance in the admissions process. Assessments for the other scholarships will take place in January of Year 6. Scholarships need to be applied for when you complete the online application form.

Bursaries are means-tested awards that enable a certain number of children to attend Epsom College whose families are unable to afford the school’s fees. You should apply for a bursary at least 6-12 months before your child is due to enrol at the College. In addition to the school’s bursaries, The Royal Medical Foundation (a charity based at the College) assists doctors and their families to pay for school fees at Epsom College and other schools when there is a proven need for financial support.

You will need to register your child for the ISEB Pre-test on the official ISEB website

Epsom College 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 ISEB Common Pre-Test Exam Format

The ISEB Pre-test assessment comprises the following areas:

  • English – evaluates reading comprehension and grammar (using cloze sentences, shuffled sentences and SPaG question types).
  • Mathematics – measures mathematical ability relative to the national curriculum stage.
  • Verbal Reasoning – tests thinking and the ability to solve problems using words.
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning – assesses thinking with shapes, space, diagrams and pictures.

In total, the four parts of the ISEB Common Pre-test take 2 hours and 15 minutes to administer and complete. There is no audio component to any of the tests.

Preparing for the Epsom College ISEB Common Pre-Test for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry

Preparing for the ISEB Common Pre-test will help your child perform well on the day. A strong performance is essential when sitting a competitive entrance test.

We have ISEB Pre-test Practice Tests that your child can work their way through, which will be enormously beneficial for the following reasons:

  • Our thoroughly researched Practice Tests mirror the format and question types of the actual ISEB Pre-test, meaning your child will know what to expect on the day. This familiarity should help them feel relaxed and enable them to perform to the best of their ability when it matters.
  • Your child can learn from any mistakes they make in the Practice Tests. This should help them avoid making similar errors in the real test, leading to a higher score.
  • The time constraints of the ISEB Pre-test should not be an issue for your child because working their way through the Practice Tests will get them used to working quickly and accurately when under time pressure.
  • Moving between the online test and written workings will not be a problem for your child in the ISEB Pre-test because they will have had plenty of practice doing this when doing the Practice Tests.
