Introduction

Reading Blue Coat School is an independent co-ed day school. It is located in Holme Park in the village of Sonning, beside the River Thames. It was founded in 1646 by Richard Aldworth, who named it ‘Aldworth’s Hospital’.

It was initially situated next to Silver Street and educated twenty poor male children, ‘the children of honest, religious poor men in the town of Reading’. In 1947, the school was relocated to its current site. At this point, it educated 150 boys.

Honouring its rich history, the school prides itself in offering a contemporary and stimulating curriculum programme.

In Years 7 and 8, core subjects include drama in English classes, practical applications of probability in maths and experimentation in the sciences. Creative arts, languages, humanities, religious studies and physical education complement a wide range of learning experiences that aim to develop pupils’ ability to think ethically, logically and creatively.

The extensive co-curriculum programme offers over 45 activities to choose from, including Young Enterprise, politics, debating, photography, climbing, a film club, archery, chess and creative writing. The school is also aligned with larger national initiatives such as the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE).

Blue Coat offers a strong pastoral programme including PSHE lessons and a series of ‘Specials’ in the Sixth form. Anti-bullying, positive mental health and digital safety are of great concern within the school’s community. Pupils are educated on managing personal challenges and leadership within the scope of Mental Health, First Aid and Peer Mentoring courses.

Every student is part of one of four Houses (Aldworth, Hall, Malthus or Rich) for the duration of their time at the school. The Houses offer pupils a warm and close immediate community, enabling them to build friendships across different year groups.

Within each House, the child has a designated member of staff who personally oversees their well-being, coupled with their intellectual and social development.

Other members of the pastoral staff are also always available, including the Head of Year, the Pastoral Deputy Head, the Chaplain and the School Counsellor. Their aim is to maintain the bond between parents and their children through a constant flow of information about their achievements and challenges.

The school’s motto is Veritas Omnia Vincit (Truth Conquers All), inspiring pupils to enter adulthood accordingly.
