Introduction
Queen’s College is a co-educational independent day and boarding school located in Taunton, the county town of Somerset. The school incorporates Nursery, Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior schools.
Queen’s College was established by the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1843. Originally educating 34 pupils, the school soon outgrew its premises, and thus a new building was commissioned in 1845 in the Trull area.
After being allocated several times, it settled on its current location in a school building in an asymmetrical Tudor Gothic style built by Giles and Gane in 1845. The Queen’s College became co-educational in the 1970s, with both female and male boarding houses being present on the school grounds.
In Years 7-9, pupils follow the Key Stage 3 curriculum. It is a broad-based curriculum designed to enable students to succeed in their subsequent GCSE years.
Classes are small in size, enabling an individual approach towards every student’s learning style. Pupils take lessons in art, biology, chemistry, design and technology, drama, English, geography, history, IT, mathematics, modern languages, music, PE, physics and religious studies.
They also follow a PHSME (Personal, Health, Social and Moral Education) course. In addition to the PHSME education, the school offers an integrated pastoral and academic tutoring system comprising medical support and a chapel.
The aims and goals of Queen’s College are to enable pupils to fulfill their potential across a full range of curricular and co-curricular activities on offer. Co-curricular activities include an Art Club, Choir, Computing Code Club, Drama Club, Engineering Club, Swimming, Chess and Scrabble, Creative Writing and a Design Club.
The college’s motto is non scholae sed vitae discimus (We educate not just for school but for life).
