Portsmouth High School is an independent day school for girls in Southsea, a district in the southern coastal city of Portsmouth. Founded in 1882 by the Girls’ Public Day School Trust, Portsmouth High has an excellent academic track record in examinations.
In Year 7, the curriculum is based around subject specialisms, comprising science, MFL, ICT creative arts, mathematics, sports and PSHEE.
Portsmouth High School is a licensed centre for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which provides a balanced programme of activities, including volunteering, sports and expeditions in the UK or abroad. Over 100 of its pupils take part in the programme each year.

Open Events for Portsmouth High School 11 Plus (11+) Entry
Open Doors events are held throughout the year, allowing families to see the school in action on a working day. They include a pupil-led tour of facilities, a drop-in on lessons and a chat with staff and the Headmistress over coffee. Pre-registration isn’t required.

Portsmouth High School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
After the visit, if you wish to register your daughter with the school, you should complete the registration form and pay a fee of £50.
Entry into Year 7 is subject to performance in the entrance examinations, assessing skills in two areas of the curriculum. A reference from your daughter’s current school will also be requested.
The 11+ exam will take place in the January of the year of entry. On exam day, your daughter will have lunch at the school and take part in workshops involving communication and team-building activities, which are part of the assessment process as well.
Portsmouth High School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Academic Scholarships are offered to top-performing candidates in the entrance examinations, whilst Music and Sports Scholarships are available to girls who are outstandingly able in those disciplines.
Academic Scholarships don’t carry significant monetary value. However, they may be supplemented with a bursary.
Music scholarships are awarded to candidates who have a range of experience performing in school concerts and assemblies, carol services, and community theatre. Applications must be submitted by the end of the Autumn Term.
If you wish your daughter to be considered for a Sports Scholarship, you should indicate your interest in the Registration Form.
Bursaries are awarded only to pupils who perform exceptionally well in the 11+ exam. They are means-tested and their value may cover the full fees, depending on the family’s financial circumstances.

Portsmouth High School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Portsmouth High School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following tests:
- English (60 mins)
- Mathematics (60 mins)
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your daughter’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
