Introduction

Old Palace of John Whitgift School is an independent school for girls in Croydon, operated by the Whitgift Foundation. Founded in 1889, the school occupies a Grade I listed building which was the summer residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury for 500 years. [1]

The curriculum in the Prep School covers maths, English, science, history, geography, art, computing, drama, DT, music and PE.

Numerous co-curricular clubs are on offer, encouraging girls to try out new things and explore existing interests. These range from orchestra, photography and sewing to cookery, ballet and chess.

The pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical well-being is further enhanced via the school’s very own Learning for Life programme, which tackles various aspects of their all-round growth, such as decision making, career education and the importance of physical activity and a healthy diet. [2]

Fundamentally, Old Palace is a school that helps students gain a strong sense of self-worth by challenging them to learn and behave in line with its high standards of education and conduct. It nurtures independence of thought whilst celebrating diversity and community, instilling in girls life-long ambition and a love of learning that serve them well throughout their adult lives.
