Introduction
Nottingham High School is an independent, co-ed day school in Nottingham. Previously a boys’ school, NHS lists an impressive number of notable alumni, including architects, classical musicians, linguists, anthropologists, investigative journalists, diplomats and producers. [1]
The Junior School, also known as NHIJS, places great emphasis on boosting pupils’ numeracy and literacy skills while providing further teaching for the areas of science, DT, geography, history, computing, music, art, PE, games, RE, MFL and PSHE.
To secure children’s overall wellbeing while educating them how to ‘win with courtesy and lose with good grace’, NHIJS offers a varied sports programme, including swimming, hockey, netball, cricket, football, tennis, dance and athletics.
Due to the superb curricular and extracurricular provision, it doesn’t come as a surprise that NHIJS received the highest rating of ‘excellent’ in regards to the quality of pupils’ academic achievements and personal development. Nottingham High School 7 Plus (7+) Admissions
In order for your child to be considered for Year 3 entry, you should submit the application by the deadline in early December.
The 7+ assessments typically take place the following month, examining skills in Maths, English and General Ability. There will also be an informal interview with a member of senior staff.
Offers are made on behalf of the Head of Infant and Junior School and should be accepted in writing by the deadline indicated in the letter. Please note that you will be asked to pay a refundable deposit to secure your child’s place.

Scholarships and bursaries are only available to Senior School applicants.
Nottingham High School 7 Plus (7+) Exam Format
Nottingham High School 7 Plus (7+) exam consists of the following assessments:
- English
- Mathematics
- General Ability (Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning)
The English exam tests comprehension and writing skills, including inference, punctuation and grammar, as well as the fluency of your child’s reading and oral skills.
The Maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills, including their knowledge of times tables.
The Verbal Reasoning section of the General Ability exam is designed to test and assess their logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning section of the General Ability test measures their ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
