Nottingham Girls’ High School 11 Plus (11+) Entrance Exam Information
Table of Contents
Nottingham Girls’ High School (NGHS) is an independent day school for girls aged 3–18 and has been educating girls since 1875. The campus, on which the original Victorian mansions stand side-by-side with purpose-built modern facilities, is located close to Nottingham Arboretum, just a short walk from the city centre. It comprises a nursery, infant and junior school, senior school and sixth form.
NGHS is a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), which is a network of 23 girls’ schools, plus 2 academies.
NGHS offers a broad and challenging academic curriculum, with students beginning their iGCSE courses in the sciences and mathematics in Year 9. In 2019, 87% of the school’s GCSE results were in the 9–6 range.
The school runs a diverse programme of co-curricular activities, which includes lots of ‘opportunities for adventure’. It prides itself on pushing boundaries and placing no limits on its students. Its football team was first established as far back as 1881, when the sport was still viewed as too dangerous for girls, and has gone on to be very successful; most recently, it won the Nottingham Post’s Sports Awards in 2018.
The school also has an excellent performing arts programme, supported by exceptional facilities, including a state-of-the-art performing arts centre – The Space – which opened in 2017.

Nottingham Girls’ High School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
NGHS is a selective school with high standards. The school’s admissions and assessment process is designed to identify students who will benefit from the school’s academic curriculum and who will flourish in the environment it has created.
For girls applying for entrance into Year 7 (11+), the entrance assessment consists of papers in English, maths and verbal reasoning and a group interview with the Deputy Head. A report and reference will also be requested from each candidate’s current school.
Girls already in the junior school at NGHS generally transfer automatically to Year 7. The school does not operate a quota system for external applicants and no priority is given to candidates with siblings already at the school. A copy of the school’s complete admissions policy can be downloaded from its website.
Only applications made on the Nottingham Girls’ High School Application Form will be accepted. A non-refundable registration fee of £50 must be paid online by credit or debit card at the time of application.
