Introduction
Norwich School, one of the oldest schools in the UK, is an independent, co-educational day school for pupils between the ages of four and eighteen. It is located close to Norwich Cathedral, Norwich and has a long history which dates back to 1096, when it was established as an episcopal grammar school by Herbert de Losinga, first Bishop of Norwich.
The school came under the control of the city of Norwich in the 16th century following a successful petition to Henry VIII and was moved to its current location, beside the cathedral, in 1551. It became independent in the 19th century, with its classical curriculum being broadened in response to the Industrial Revolution and the declining demand for classical education.
Its enrollment stands at approximately 1,020 pupils. The School admitted only boys until 1994, when it officially became co-educational in the sixth form. In 2010, the school became fully co-educational.
The Senior School has around 850 pupils aged from 12 to 18 across eight houses. They can choose from a wide range of activities, including choral and orchestral recitals, designed to nurture their affinity to music, as well as sailing, kayaking and athletics in the sports category and dance and theatre in the performance department.
Norwich School is committed to fostering young people’s capacities towards understanding difficult concepts and expressing complex and profound ideas. With the school’s rich and broad education, young people are with a specific knowledge that encourages leadership and service.
According to The Sunday Times “Parent Power Schools Guide”, Norwich School was classified as a top performing independent secondary school in Norfolk and Suffolk, with a ranking of 90th in the overall table for independent secondary schools in the country.
Aside from achieving the top A-level and GCSE results of any school in Norfolk and Suffolk, it has received the Norfolk Chamber’s Young Chamber Enterprise Recognition Award due to its commitment to improving the employability skills of young people in the region.
In addition, Norwich School is a recipient of the highest grading possible in all areas of a recent educational quality inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) for both Senior and Lower Schools, with a grading of excellent across the board.

The school promotes equal opportunities and conducts admissions in a fair and non-discriminatory manner. Pupils with additional learning needs are also considered for entry and the school encourages parents to make any special requirements clear as early as possible in the admissions process.
Requests for special arrangements are made by filling in the special arrangements form and providing relevant documentation such as: professional assessment reports written within two years of the date of the entrance exam, medical reports and/or evidence of history of need/provision at current school.
It’s a common practice for the school to acknowledge all received applications within a few days. A fortnight before the first entrance assessment morning, details are sent to the contact(s) named on the application form.
Children usually attend the exam in their own clothes. They are then assessed in three separate papers and are invited back to the school on a separate day for applicant interviews and activity sessions.
An academic reference from the child’s current school is also requested unless indicated otherwise during the application. The results of the application are shared with parents by February.
