Merchant Taylors’ School, Crosby is an independent day school for boys and girls located in Great Crosby on Merseyside. The boys’ school was founded in 1620 under the instruction of the estate of John Harrison, a citizen and Merchant Taylor of London. The girls’ school was established in 1888, after inheriting the buildings from the boys’ school which relocated less than a mile away in 1874.
The curriculum for both the boys’ and girls’ schools offers a broad range of subjects within a programme that differs only slightly. Boys take lessons in art, biology, chemistry, classics & Latin, computing & ICT, design technology, drama, economics, English, geography, history & politics, mathematics, PE, physics, religious studies and philosophy, as well as music and modern languages.
Girls study the core subjects in accordance with the National Curriculum, plus business, classics studies, drama & theatre, economics, ICT, PSHE and modern languages.
The school takes great pride in providing state-of-the-art sports facilities to both boys and girls. The ‘Ian Robinson Sports Centre’ is used by all Merchant Taylors’ pupils and is open to members of the public during evenings, weekends and school holidays.
The School Health Service is always available to help children remain healthy and happy so that they can fully enjoy and benefit from a well-rounded education.
A highly qualified and experienced School Nurse is also available on campus and is deeply involved with the students’ wellbeing. As part of the Pastoral Team, the School Nurse contributes to students’ Health Education and develops an Individual Health Care Plan for those pupils with medical concerns. There is also a Medical Room within each school, open throughout the school day.
The boys’ school has its own Gifted, Talented and eXtension (GTX) enrichment programme, designed to stretch pupils’ abilities beyond the limitations of exam specifications.
Girls can join the Combined Cadet Force: a joint activity with Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School. Counting over 260 boys and girls, the programme provides the opportunity of attending a variety of camps and courses, both in Great Britain and overseas. Mountaineering, camping, sailing, flying and shooting are just a few of the activities on offer.
Both boys and girls are encouraged to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and many achieve success in the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
The school’s motto is that of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors: Concordia Parvae Res Crescunt (Small things grow in harmony).
