Introduction
Mayville High School is an independent co-educational day school in Southsea, Portsmouth. With an enduring presence in Southsea for over 120 years, the school follows the Diamond model, educating girls and boys separately in core curriculum subjects.
In Year 7, pupils study: English, maths, science, PE, French, geography, history, ICT, RE, music, art, DT, drama and food & dance.
Within the extra-curricular programme, Seniors have the opportunity to travel abroad with Camps International where they help rebuild communities. These trips are to far-off destinations such as Cambodia, Borneo, Kenya and Ecuador. They also take part in numerous sporting activities, choosing from athletics, badminton, cricket, football, gymnastics, netball, rounders, rugby, swimming, trampolining and volleyball.
In line with each pupil’s different learning style, the school fosters an individualised approach towards teaching, providing a strong, secure base from which students can mature into tolerant, responsible and supportive members of society. Mayville High School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
The admissions process includes entrance assessments, held in January of the year of entry. In addition, prospective pupils spend a day in the Senior School the same month. A reference from your child’s current school will be requested. There will also be an interview.
Mayville High School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
The school awards Academic Scholarships on the basis of performance in the 11+ entry assessments. Scholarships for excellence in Creative Arts (Art, Drama, Music, Dance) and Sports are also available.
Creative Arts Scholarships are awarded on the grounds of performance in the entrance examinations and a specialist reference from your child’s current teacher or coach. Similarly, Sports Scholarships are awarded on the basis of your child’s performance in the entrance assessment and a specialist reference from their current teacher of sport and/or external coaches/managers.
Your child will be expected to perform short pieces if they wish to be considered for Music, Drama or Dance awards. Applicants for the Art Scholarship should provide a portfolio of evidence of their work.
Scholarships offer up to 50% reduction in fees. To apply for an award, you should indicate your interest in the registration form. Bursaries can supplement a Scholarship.
Assisted Places are means-tested. To be considered, you will be expected to provide proof of your income and assets. The level of support varies, depending on your need, but is never more than 80% of full fees.
Assisted Places are always offered annually, hence you will be asked to provide fresh information about your circumstances each year.
Mayville High School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Mayville High School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following tests:
- English (comprehension & writing)
- Mathematics (multiple-choice)
- Reasoning (Verbal and Non-Verbal)
The English paper, in multiple-choice format, examines comprehension skills, including inference and factual recollection.
The creative writing assessment tests spelling, vocabulary and punctuation skills. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam (multiple-choice) assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess their logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning test measures their ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, assessing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.

Why do some of the recommendations above show me grammar school papers?
The main difference between independent and grammar school papers is the question format. Independent schools usually assess with standard format questions, which means students need to write out full answers. Grammar schools usually use multiple-choice format questions.
