Leicester High School for Girls 11 Plus (11+) Entrance Exam Information – Key Details

Leicester High School for Girls is an independent day school for girls aged 3-18. It is one of the academically highest achieving schools in the UK.

With a Christian ethos at its heart, the school is open to all pupils. Traditional values of honesty, responsibility and self-reliance are encouraged, and strong moral values and codes of behaviour are balanced with a progressive curriculum that prepares girls for university and life in general.

Founded in 1906 as a Christian foundation, the school was originally called Portland House and pupils wore distinctive uniforms of yellow and blue striped blazers, grey skirts and straw boaters. It is known by its current name since 1985, with an update of the uniform taking place in 2006, the school’s centenary year.

The school’s emphasis is on volunteering and community service. Furthermore, its collaboration with local primary schools provides girls with the opportunity to build their science skills through the Science Superstars scheme.

The school works closely with a number of local nurseries as well, providing them with access to the school’s outdoor learning space and other facilities in the Junior Department, located on the same site as the Senior school building.

The Senior school was renovated in 2010, and now has an award-winning courtyard garden, surrounded by six science laboratories, a languages computer suite, drama/dance studio, gym, library, art and design studio, food studies room and IT suites.

The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities such as athletics, art, cheerleading, choir, drama, football, health and fitness, Mandarin, orchestra, photography and many others.

Participation in performing arts activities and music groups is very popular among girls, and the school even provides sponsorship for the annual Music in the Park event in support of the LOROS Hospice.
