Introduction
Founded around 1235, Lancaster Royal Grammar School (LRGS) is a state day and boarding school in the Lancashire city of Lancaster. It is known for its numerous academic and sporting successes, as well as its long list of notable alumni, including many businessmen, a Nobel Prize winner and a Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. [1]
Reflecting the school’s distinguished academic tradition, the curriculum at LRGS covers relevant disciplines, including classics, natural sciences, computer science and many more. The provision is grounded in the efforts to ensure boys’ smooth progression into further education, supported and encouraged by dedicated and professional teaching staff.
Non-academically, LRGS provides a wealth of opportunities for boys to explore their unique strengths and talents. Available activities range from cricket, debating and rowing to table tennis, Law Society and orchestra, enhancing an impressively rich extra-curricular programme that holistically engages students in all-round development. [2]
Recently, 61% of all grades fell within the 9-7 range, and 19% of all exam results were graded 9. In addition to academic achievements, the school’s boarding provision received an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted, a testament to the high-quality care and support extended to students who board. This ‘Outstanding’ rating also encompasses other key aspects of the school’s ethos, such as pupils’ behaviour, attitudes and personal development.
