Introduction

Kingston Grammar School (KGS) is a co-educational independent school, based in the very heart of Kingston upon Thames. It has a long history, extending back over 450 years, having been officially founded as a free grammar school in 1561 by the royal charter of Queen Elizabeth I. The Queen also gifted the school its 14th century Lovekyn Chapel, which takes its name from the prominent local butcher and baker for whom it was originally built.

The school has a strong academic focus and its exam results at GCSE and A-Level place it in the top 1% of UK secondary schools. To add to its academic rigour, alongside traditional subjects, KGS places a lot of weight on extension projects for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts & Maths).

However, the school is also well known for its sporting successes, especially in hockey and rowing – it has produced 26 Olympians and owns a 22-acre sports field, plus a boat house, on the River Thames in Thames Ditton, opposite Hampton Court Palace.

Why do some of the recommendations above show me grammar school papers?

The main difference between independent and grammar school papers is the question format. Independent schools usually assess with standard format questions, which means students need to write out full answers. Grammar schools usually use multiple-choice format questions.

Whilst Kingston Grammar School is an independent school, they actually use the grammar school (multiple-choice) format for some of their exams, which is why they are included in the recommendations above.

Our practice tests aim to show what sort of questions were included in Kingston Grammar School 11+ past papers. The information provided about Kingston Grammar School was believed to be correct at the time of publishing. However, please be aware of future changes. We advise you to contact the school directly if you are unsure of anything. School contact details are provided within the post.
