Kingston Grammar School (KGS) is a co-educational independent school for students aged 11–18 years, based in the very heart of Kingston upon Thames. It has a long history, extending back over 450 years, having been officially founded as a free grammar school in 1561 by royal charter of Queen Elizabeth I. The Queen also gifted the school its 14th century Lovekyn Chapel, which takes its name from the prominent local butcher and baker for whom it was originally built.
The school has a strong academic focus and its exam results at GCSE and A-Level place it in the top 1% of UK secondary schools. To add to its academic rigour, alongside traditional subjects, KGS places a lot of weight in extension projects for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts & Maths). However, the school is also well known for its sporting successes, especially in hockey and rowing – it has produced 26 Olympians and owns a 22-acre sports field, plus boat house, on the River Thames in Thames Ditton, opposite Hampton Court Palace.

Only candidates who have achieved the required standards in the entrance exam will be invited for interview. The interview may be of a general nature or subject specific (English or maths) depending on performance in the exam.
Potential scholarship students are identified based on performance in the entrance exam and are required to take further assessments in English and maths a week later to aid decision making.
Scholarships can also be applied for in art, music and sport.

The deadline for registration and to apply for fee assistance (by completing a separate form) is at the very beginning of December.
The school publishes an Admissions Brochure, which is available for download from its website and covers all the key information, including procedures, scholarships, deadlines and fees.
The Kingston Grammar School entrance exam consists of English, maths and verbal reasoning papers, which broadly reflect the National Curriculum up to Year 6.
The English paper has three parts based upon a passage of text: multiple-choice comprehension questions, a comprehension question requiring a detailed written response and a writing composition task.
The maths paper tests knowledge, understanding and application of skills in number and algebra, shape, space and measure and handling data. Calculators cannot be used.
Potential scholarship students are identified based on performance in the entrance exam and are required to take further assessments in English and maths a week later. The scholarship papers are more challenging and the maths paper has a strong focus on problem solving.
