Kingham Hill School is a co-educational independent day and boarding school located near the village of Kingham in Oxfordshire. Founded by local landowner and Christian philanthropist Charles Edward Baring Young in 1886, it occupies buildings designed by the architect William Howard Seth-Smith.
In Year 7, pupils study English, mathematics, science, MFL, geography, history, Latin, physical education, music, theology, drama, digital literacy and design & technology.
Enhancing the all-round development of its pupils, the school offers a broad co-curricular programme, including sailing, cooking, farm club, mountain biking, the Combined Cadet Force, and community volunteering.
Described by the Good Schools Guide as ‘…a supportive community of pupils and teachers treating each other with respect and kindness in this area of outstanding natural beauty’, the school recently ranked first in The Telegraph ‘Top Small Independent Schools’ list for best A-Level results.
Kingham Hill offers pupils endless opportunities to learn, excel and maximise their potential whilst prioritising development both in and beyond the classroom, ensuring that they leave as rounded young adults ready to pursue their goals beyond school.

Open Days offer families the opportunity to meet the teaching staff, take a pupil-led tour of the campus and learn more about the school. Booking is made via an online form.
A private visit includes a meeting with the Headmaster and a personalised tour. To arrange one, you should fill in an online form or contact the Registrar.
Taster Days and Stays include an overnight stay in one of the boarding houses for candidates considering boarding. Your child will be given a ‘buddy’ (a current pupil of the same age), who they will accompany to lessons and activities. Taster visits can be arranged with the Registrar.
The school admits pupils on the basis of current academic achievement and potential. The first step of the admissions process includes an informal interview with the Headmaster, or occasionally, the Deputy Headmaster.
You should then complete a registration form and return it to the school, along with a non-returnable deposit.
The school will further assess your child on the basis of entrance examinations (scheduled with the Registrar) and current-school reports. If a place is offered, you should accept it by signing an acceptance form and paying a deposit.
To be considered for scholarships, your child will be expected to get higher results in the same papers during a separate assessment day. They will be invited to attend a Scholarship Day in the Michaelmas term to demonstrate their specialism and to be interviewed by the Headmaster.
At 11+, the school offers Scholarships and Exhibitions. Academic, Organ and Founder’s Scholarships are available, along with Exhibitions in Music and Sport, or any other field.
The level of the scholarship award is determined by the Head, although typically, fee remission is limited to a maximum of 50%. For further information and application details, please contact the school’s Master of Scholars.
The Kingham Hill Trust offers a limited number of bursaries each year to pupils from low-income families. These are means-tested and cover a maximum of 50% of fees. In cases of particular need, the school may suggest other grant making trusts that can offer additional financial support. For more information on bursaries, please contact the Bursar.
The Kingham Hill School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following tests:
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess their logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning test measures their ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, assessing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
