Introduction

 

The King’s School is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Canterbury, Kent. Founded in 597 AD, it’s Britain’s oldest public school and arguably the oldest continuously operating school in the world.

 

In Year 7, pupils study the core subjects plus art, Classics, DT, computing & IT, geography, history, languages, mathematics, music, RE and PSHE. Extra-curricular activities offer children the opportunity to learn new skills for life and discover a variety of new hobbies. They include ballet, horse riding, trampolining, and the school’s own leadership programme, The Milner Challenge.

Open Days offer you and your child the opportunity to explore the school’s extensive campus, meet the staff to ask questions, and hear a short presentation from the Head, followed by refreshments.

Junior King’s School, Canterbury, 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

 

For Year 7 entry, Junior King’s and The King’s School offer a ‘through place’ following successful performance in the entrance exam and a positive reference from your child’s current school. Common Entrance exams are still undertaken but they are generally intended for setting purposes.

 

To register your child, you should complete and return the Registration Form together with the registration fee. Your child will thus be added to the provisional entry list for the relevant term and year.

 

The entrance assessments are set in January / February, however, it is possible for them to be scheduled at an alternative date later in the year if places are still available. Following the receipt of a school report and your child’s successful performance in the entrance exam, they will be invited for an interview with the Head or a Senior Staff member.

 

If your child performs well in all stages of the admissions process, you will receive a formal offer of a place, which you should accept in writing and pay the relevant acceptance deposit.

 

Junior King’s School, Canterbury, 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

 

Following the 11+ entry tests, your child may be invited to attend a special 11+ Scholarship Day at the school. They will attend extension tests in English, maths and Thinking Skills and an individual interview with a Senior Staff member.

 

Two 11+ Academic Scholarships and two 11+ Academic Exhibitions are awarded to internal or external candidates showing strong academic potential. The maximum award covers 5% of the fees for a scholarship and 2.5% for an exhibition. For more information about scholarships and awards, please visit the school’s website.

 

An award could be applied in conjunction with a means-tested bursary. Bursaries are offered to parents or guardians of children at the discretion of the Governors, whilst the Head and School Bursar manage and coordinate the process.

 

Bursary support covers up to 100% of full boarding fees and is subject to annual testing of parental means. It may vary depending on changes in your financial circumstances. A Statement of Financial Circumstances is available from the Bursar.

 

Bursaries will be given to those in financial need who are likely to gain the most from the educational opportunities the school provides. Each child’s capacity to contribute to the wider school community will also be taken into consideration.

The King’s School entrance assessment consists of:

 

  • Digital, standardised tests (CAT)
  • Creative writing task

 

The CAT test aims to assess developed abilities via modules testing Verbal, Non-Verbal, Spatial and Quantitative Reasoning.

 

There is also a  paper that tests your child’s writing skills, including spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.
