Ibstock Place School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Information

Ibstock Place School is a coeducational independent school for children aged 4–18, made up of a prep school and senior school. It is located on the edge of Richmond Park – a National Nature Reserve and a European Special Area of Conservation – in Roehampton, South West London.

The school first opened in 1896 as a demonstration school for a teacher training college, which was established upon the educational principles of Freidrich Froebel. Froebel’s ideas were considered radical at the time, because of the emphasis they placed on the learning experiences of young children, but both the college and school proved to be very successful.

The school was originally located in Kensington but had to be evacuated to Hertfordshire at the start of World War II.  When the school returned to London, it was re-housed at Ibstock Place in Roehampton. The school remains on this site today but is now independent of the Froebel Trust.

The stylish ‘Main House’ of Ibstock Place was built as a luxury home in 1913 and featured in Country Life magazine in 1921. Since then, much renovation and building work has taken place to expand and modernise the school facilities. A 10-year School Development Plan was completed in 2015, which included a sports hall, ‘New School’ and performing arts centre.

The school states that it is committed to providing a ‘liberal and humane education.’ It offers a broad, flexible and challenging academic curriculum with a strong focus on traditional academic subjects. In 2018, 84% of its GCSE grades were A*–A.

Ibstock Place School 11 Plus Admissions

There are two stages to the Ibstock Place School admissions process. All registered candidates are invited for an individual interview with a member of staff and a computer-based test in early January. A written entrance exam is then held in late January, which consists of papers in English, maths and reasoning.

Offers are made approximately two weeks after the entrance exam and the deadline for acceptance is at the beginning of March.

There is no automatic entry to the senior school from the prep school. All internal candidates go through the same assessment process as external candidates.

A limited number of means-tested bursaries are available and the Richard Hastie-Smith Music Awards, which run for two years, are open to candidates applying for 11+ entry. Application forms may be obtained from the Registrar: registrar@ibstockplaceschool.co.uk or 020 8392 5803.

How to Apply for 11 Plus Entry to Ibstock Place School

Ibstock Place School holds open events in May and September for prospective pupils considering entry to the senior school and their parents. Booking for one of the open events can be made via an online booking form on the school’s website.

For their child to be considered and assessed for a place in Senior 7 (Year 7), parents must complete the Ibstock Place Registration Form and an Examination Entry Form (available on request from the Registrar). There is a non-refundable registration fee of £150. The deadline for both forms is in November, but early registration is recommended.

The school publishes an Admissions Guide, which is available for download from its website and provides a good overview of the application process.

Ibstock Place School 11 Plus Assessment and Exam Format

The first part of the Ibstock Place assessment process is a computer-based test. This is likely to include multiple-choice questions that assess verbal, non-verbal and numerical reasoning skills as a measure of academic potential.

The written entrance exam consists of papers in:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Reasoning (verbal and non-verbal).

The papers are set and marked by the school and are based on the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2. The school does not publish any past papers.
