Introduction
Ibstock Place School is a co-educational independent school for children aged 4-–18, made up of a pre-prep, prep, senior school and sixth form. It is located on the edge of Richmond Park – a National Nature Reserve and a European Special Area of Conservation – in Roehampton, South West London.
The school first opened in 1896 as a demonstration school for a teacher training college, which was established upon the educational principles of Friedrich Froebel. Froebel’s ideas were considered radical at the time, because of the emphasis they placed on the learning experiences of young children, but both the college and school proved to be very successful.
The school was originally located in Kensington but had to be evacuated to Hertfordshire at the start of World War II. When the school returned to London, it was re-housed at Ibstock Place in Roehampton. The school is still on this site but is now independent of the Froebel Trust.
The stylish ‘Main House’ of Ibstock Place was built as a luxury home in 1913 and featured in Country Life magazine in 1921. Since then, much renovation and building work has taken place to expand and modernise the school facilities. A 10-year School Development Plan was completed in 2015, which included a sports hall, ‘New School’ and performing arts centre.
Ibstock Place School is committed to providing a rigorous and imaginative education. As such, it offers a broad, flexible and challenging academic curriculum with a strong focus on traditional academic subjects. Recently, 75% of its GCSE grades were 9-7.
