Introduction
Gad’s Hill School is an independent day school in Kent, and was formerly Gad’s Hill Place, the country home of Charles Dickens. Cedric Charles Dickens, the author’s great-grandson, was a governor of the school until his death in 2006, whilst Marion Dickens, the author’s great-great-granddaughter, is a former pupil of the school.
Gad’s Hill’s aim is to enable students to enjoy school, and thus achieve academic qualifications and develop personal attributes and qualities which will guide them through adulthood.
It offers a well-rounded education with the intent that students leaving Gad’s Hill be confident, mature and self-reliant young people. Excellence, enthusiasm, friendship and success underpin the school’s approach towards education as children are trained to become motivated and articulate young people ready for whatever life brings them.
Coupled with such a strong and inspiring ethos, the school’s curriculum further enables the development of individual talents and skills among students. The broad programme comprises English, maths, science, computing, design and technology, art, history, geography, Spanish, music, drama, CCF and SMSC.
SMSC is a reflection of the school’s dedication towards developing the whole student. The Social, Moral, Spiritual, and Cultural development of students is central to the outstanding education provided inside and outside the classroom.
Through the taught curriculum, pastoral programme, trips and visits, SMSC is developed and extended, resulting in students’ active membership within the school’s community.
As access is provided to the wider worlds, the children learn more about it and are better equipped for its changing nature. Residential visits occur frequently in senior years, including trips to France (Paris, St Omer and Le Mans). Trips to Belgium have included visits to the WW1 battlefields and there are also annual Rugby and Netball tours. Science and Geography lessons are expanded through trips to Iceland and China, while the horrors of modern History are revisited through trips to Labour Camps in Poland and Germany.
In the summer holidays, students are offered the opportunity to experience a variety of adrenaline-fueled activities in Italy and France. Previous trips have included white-water rafting, canoeing, climbing and abseiling. Closer to home, children regularly visit museums, theatres, exhibitions and events.
The school’s motto, First to thine own self be true is embodied by each student, as they grow into maturity with firm knowledge about themselves and those around them.
