Introduction

Forest School is an independent co-educational school located in Walthamstow, in the London borough of Waltham Forest. The earliest buildings at the front of the school date from the eighteenth century.

In 1834, local dignitaries set its foundations under the name Forest Proprietary Grammar School. In 1848, after a turbulent period, Forest’s third headmaster John Gilderdale firmly put the school on its feet and laid the foundations for it to be one of the most successful nineteenth-century schools.

After the arrival of Gerald Cedar Miller as a Head of the school in 1936, Forest transformed into a modern, twentieth-century school. Following WW2, the Aston Block, Science Block, new Junior School, new Manor House and Tuck shop were added to the campus and these new buildings were further enhanced by a new swimming pool and re-levelling of the Park.

The full transformation was completed by the end of the 1970s with the opening of the Girls’ School. The arrival of girls was acknowledged by HRH The Duchess of Kent, who visited the school in 1981 on its opening day.

The Year 7 curriculum includes English, mathematics, science, religious studies, history, geography, art, design and technology, food and nutrition, drama, wellbeing, music, Latin, computer science and physical education.

In Year 7 pupils have the opportunity to choose to study two Modern Foreign Languages from French, German, Mandarin and Spanish.

According to the GCSE report, Forest School, for the second year in a row, has accomplished the following: at least 75% of the 1400 individual GCSE grades awarded to the 150 pupils were A**/A*/A and 50% were A**/A* with 20 pupils achieving straight A**/A*.
