Introduction
Felsted School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school in Felsted, Essex. Established in 1564 by Richard Rich, Felsted is one of the 12 founding members of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference, and a full member of the Round Square Conference of world schools.
The school’s extensive curriculum consists of English, mathematics, science, history, geography, religious education, ICT, music, PE, art, design, technology & engineering, Latin, French, Spanish and German.
Within the co-curricular programme, Felsted’s dedicated teachers provide sport, music, drama and art lessons alongside a plethora of extras such as Ceramics, Medical Society, Pilates, Photography, Debating and Travel Media.

Open Events for Felsted Prep School 11 Plus (11+) Entry
Open Morning provides families with the opportunity to meet staff, subject teachers and Felsted’s current pupils. Tours of the Senior School take place during the event. They include displays and activities designed to give visitors a taste of life on campus.

Felsted Prep School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
The admissions process begins with registration. The next step includes taking the entrance examination called Standard Entry Assessment in November of the year preceding entry.
Admissions decisions are based on your child’s performance in the examinations and interview with the Head, as well as a positive confidential report from their current school.
If a place is offered, you will be asked to reserve it with a payment of a deposit. This is typically refunded during your child’s last term at Felsted.
Felsted Prep School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Following the entrance exam, top candidates will be invited to apply for Academic Scholarship examinations in January. These are followed by a scholarship interview with the Head.
Children with genuine musical promise in two or more instruments or singing may apply for a Music Scholarship following a Standard Entry offer (in the January prior to entry). For more information about this scholarship, please visit the school’s website.
The Mary Skill Award is awarded to children who possess a talent in academic subjects other than English, mathematics and Science, such as art, design & technology, drama, ICT, languages, sport or any other hobby/interest that demands a high level of commitment, skill, passion and genuine talent.
Scholarships can be worth up to 20% of the annual fees and the Mary Skill Awards up to £2000. All Scholarships and Mary Skill Awards may be accompanied by a means-tested bursary. For more information about bursaries, please visit the school’s website.
Felsted Prep School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The entrance assessment for candidates applying to join Year 7 (11+) consists of the following papers:
- English comprehension
- English writing
- Mathematics reasoning
- Arithmetics
- Verbal Reasoning
- Non-Verbal Reasoning
The English papers examine comprehension and writing skills, whilst the maths papers test mathematical reasoning, problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills.
The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess your child’s logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper is designed to measure their ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
