Introduction
Exeter School is an independent, co-educational day school in Devon. Dating back to 1633, it occupies a 25-acre site on Victoria Park Road.
The curriculum covers art, computer science, classical civilisation, DT, drama, humanities, music, RS, Latin, MFL, English, maths, science and PE.
Exeter offers a wide range of academic societies, such as Crossing Club, Catalyst Club and Comets Club. The varied programme of extracurricular activities includes art, chess, coding, debating, Medical Society, Model United Nations and photography.

Open Events for Exeter School 13 Plus (13+) Entry
The school recommends that you attend an open event prior to applying for entry. The Whole School Open Evening takes place in early November, allowing you and your child to learn more about what Exeter can offer in the long run.
Individual visits can also be arranged. These typically include a meeting with the Head.
Exeter School 13 Plus (13+) Admissions
To register for Year 9 entry, you should complete a registration form and pay the registration fee. Your child will then be invited to sit entrance examinations, held in January of the year of entry.
Based on successful performance throughout the admissions process, your child may receive an offer of a place. Offers are sent out by post, including a copy of the parent contract, a copy of the School rules and an acceptance form.
Exeter School 13 Plus (13+) Scholarships and Bursaries
The school offers scholarships and exhibitions to successful candidates in the entrance examinations.
Music Scholarships and Awards are awarded as a recognition of musical talent and achievement. If your child wishes to be considered for these awards, you should fill in the appropriate application form, available from the Admissions and Marketing office.
Means-tested awards (bursaries) are also available. These are awarded following your child’s successful performance in the entrance examinations and require that you submit a verified statement of financial circumstances.
The bursary application form can be obtained from the Registrar. Please note that only families with an annual income below £60,000 will be considered eligible.
As a result of donations and grants from a local charity, Exeter School offers up to eight free places in the Senior School. More details are available in the school’s Admissions Policy.
Exeter School 13 Plus (13+) Exam Format
The Exeter School 13 Plus exam consists of the following tests:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Modern Foreign Languages
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The science paper examines knowledge in the areas of physics, chemistry and biology.
The MFL exam consists of short papers (30 mins) in French, German and Spanish. Prospective applicants will be expected to sit one of these exams.
