Introduction
Epsom College is an independent day and boarding school for students aged 11–18. It is situated in the market town of Epsom in Surrey, on the beautiful Epsom Downs, approximately 15 miles south-west of London.
The college has been fully coeducational for over 40 years. However, as part of its pastoral care programme, each student is assigned to a single-sex house on joining the college.
Epsom College began life in 1855 as The Royal Medical Benevolent College, which was founded to provide housing and education to the orphans of medical families. The Royal Medical Foundation is still based at the college and continues to support medical families today.
The Lower School (Years 7 and 8) at Epsom College is still relatively new, having only been open since 2016. It follows a broad curriculum with a strong focus on equipping students with learning skills that will benefit them throughout their career at Epsom and beyond.
Co-curricular activities are timetabled from 4 p.m. onwards each day. The college offers over 100 clubs and activities, including over 22 sports, which are catered for in excellent specialist facilities on the 85-acre campus.

Epsom College 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Parents wishing their child to be considered for a place in Third Form (Year 7) at Epsom College must complete and return a registration form, which can be downloaded from the college’s website. A non-refundable registration fee of £150 is required at the time of registration. The deadline for registration is at the end of October in the year preceding entry (whilst the child is in Year 6).
Epsom College has a strong academic focus. However, it states that it is looking for ‘well-rounded’ students and that its admissions process is designed to assess potential. Offers of places in the Third Form (Year 7) at Epsom College are made based on an interview, a competitive entrance exam and a reference from the candidate’s current school.
Interviews are in the Autumn Term preceding the exam and are carried out by the Head of the Lower School or a senior member of staff. The entrance exam takes place in January.
Offers of places are sent out at the beginning of February and a decision is required by early March. If you wish to accept the offer and reserve your child’s place at the school, you will be asked to pay a £4,000 deposit.
Epsom College 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships and bursaries are available. All candidates entering into the admissions assessment process are automatically considered for Academic Scholarship and there are no separate exams.
However, a separate assessment is required for Sports and Arts Scholarships. Application forms for these scholarships are sent out to all registered candidates.
Bursary funds are limited, so parents interested in financial assistance are encouraged to apply 6–12 months ahead of enrolment. When awarding larger financial assistance, the school looks into pupils’ academic, sporting or performance skills, giving preference to those with stronger abilities.
Please note that bursaries are reviewed annually, which means that your finances will be re-assessed every year and the level of financial assistance will be adjusted in accordance with any changes in your circumstances. More details are available on this page.
