Durham High School for Girls 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Admission to Year 7 is through examination, interview and a school reference. The entrance examination is set in January. To register, you should complete the online form available on the school’s website.
At 11+, the school offers a number of Scholarships and awards. Academic Scholarships are awarded (on the basis of the entrance examinations) to top-performing girls. These may be supplemented by a Governors’ Bursary and cover 50% of the fees.
Music, Performing Arts and Drama Scholarships are awarded following auditions. Sports Scholarships are awarded following an evaluation of sporting performance.
The Barbara Priestman Scholarship is awarded at 11+ to daughters of practising Christians of any denomination. Assessments consist of a Religious Studies test which takes place shortly after the entrance examination.
The Governors’ Scholarship gives an entirely free place for seven years to an able girl from a low-income family joining Year 7.
Governors’ Bursaries are means-tested and are worth up to 50% of the current fees per annum. These are reviewed annually.

The Durham High School for Girls 11+ entrance examination consists of the following papers:
- Verbal Reasoning
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam consists of both open answer and multiple-choice questions. It assesses your daughter’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
