Introduction
Culford School is a coeducational independent day and boarding school located in Culford, 4 miles north of Bury St Edmunds.
The school, initially founded under the name East Anglian School for Boys, was established in response to the growth of the middle class, the launching of the Woodard Schools and the 1867 Taunton Commission, which ignited a secondary education expansion, as well as the spread of non-conformist boarding schools.
Occupying 480 acres of grazing parkland, formal gardens, a lake and a 16th-18th Century Hall, the school is known for an approach towards teaching that is based on creating highly-personalised learning journeys, complemented with an education that is challenging, enriching and fun.
Pupils at Culford School study art and design, DT, drama, English language and literature, French, Spanish, games, geography, history, ICT, mathematics, music, RS, biology, chemistry, physics and Latin (optionally).
The wide range of activities forms an integral part of school life and is reflected in the activities programme which involves challenges for the body, mind or a combination of the two. The programme comprises creative activities such as art, drama and dance; sports activities, including rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis and swimming; music activities, including learning to play an instrument and performing in an ensemble/band and singing, as well as Academic Societies.
Pastoral Care at Culford School ensures that each pupil is supported by a personal tutor as well as the Housemaster or Housemistress of their House. There are four Houses at Culford Senior School, each aiming to create a family atmosphere where students are encouraged to become independent, take on more responsibility for them and others, and thus prepare for life at university and beyond.
Half of the academic staff are trained in Youth Mental First Aid, whilst the Medical centre team, along with other professionals, is always available, encouraging students to talk openly about their emotions so that they’ll feel empowered to respond properly to the ups and downs of daily life.
Overall, this Christian school with a Methodist tradition understands education as a transformational process which includes instilling clear moral values and leadership qualities in students in order to secure their readiness for the adult world.
