Introduction

Croydon High School is an independent day school for girls located near Croydon, London and is one of the original schools founded by the Girls’ Day School Trust. Established in 1874 by the formidable suffragette Dorinda Neligan in Wellesley Road, it is known for its balance between creating a challenging environment and individual pastoral care, as well as a passionate and dedicated staff for whom the girls are always the first priority.

Occupying stunning grounds with impressive facilities, Croydon High School is a place where girls are taught to embrace challenges and opportunities and where their remarkable talents and aspirations are nurtured for the benefit of the whole community. The strong leadership of the school ensures that every girl is supported throughout her academic growth and that her accomplishments are celebrated.

The school’s particular interest is in fostering innovation, creativity, exploration and enjoyment. All pupils study the following subjects; English, biology, chemistry, physics, enterprise technology, history, geography, philosophy and ethics, music, drama, art, 3D design and PE. Additionally, almost all pupils study two modern foreign languages.

Awareness-raising events and charity fundraisers are common for girls attending Senior school, forming an intrinsic part of the school’s community ethos. The school organises trips to Europe, as well, enabling girls to grow in experience and independence through the exploration of the Art, Politics and History of other nations.

The extensive co-curricular programme puts emphasis on team sports, where the school has enjoyed much success in regional tournaments such as the London Youth Games. From Netball and Hockey to Cricket and Rugby, the school consistently encourages competitive excellence among girls.

The school’s academic clubs include: Foreign Language Film Club, The Art of Diplomacy Club, Mathematical Olympiad for girls and Chess Club. The art and design clubs include: Installation Art, Glass Jewellery Making, Computer Game Development Club, Music Video Appreciation Club, and many more.

At a more personal level, the school reaches out to parents frequently on individual issues concerning their daughter. In general, parents receive a weekly email with relevant letters and information regarding their daughter’s performance and progress.

Croydon High School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

The school’s entrance examination is set in January. In order to register, parents need to complete a registration form. All applicants will automatically be assessed for Academic Scholarship as part of the eleven plus, so there is no need for a separate application.

For entry, girls will be tested using an adaptive online test, designed to assess ability in skills such as numeracy, problem solving and vocabulary. There will also be an interview with a member of the senior staff.

The school arranges appointments for every parent to meet with Headmistress after the January examinations in order to discuss their daughter’s aspirations.

Flexible testing arrangements are also a possibility. The school vows to always try and accommodate parents with additional testing dates and do everything they can to assist them in the process.

As part of the testing process, the school also carries out a teaching activity after which the girls are asked to complete a task based on the skills and content taught in the session. This provides the school with an opportunity to interact with the girls, individually, in an informal non-interview process.

This method of testing assesses the girls’ natural ability in key skills, making the potential of every girl visible as opposed to the amount of preparation and revision she has undertaken. The school’s primary aim is to determine how the applicants think and respond to engaging teaching.

Croydon High School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

The 11+ exam at Croydon High School consists of the following assessment:

  • Adaptive online test (similar to CEM Select)

The test examines the child’s ability in skills such as numeracy, problem-solving and vocabulary, with emphasis on how they think and how they will respond to the curriculum instead of what they know and how well they have been trained.

Please see below for further details and recommendations on how to prepare for the Croydon High School 11+ examination.

How to Prepare for Croydon High School 11 Plus (11+) Exam

At Exam Papers Plus, we recommend that students follow a structured revision plan that includes practice tests. The more time students have to prepare, the more time they’ll have to improve any weak areas.

Additionally, practice tests serve as a great way to monitor a child’s progress and will help you assess your daughter’s natural aptitude and ability regardless of past learning.

We highly recommend a thorough revision timetable well ahead of exam day. The more prepared children are ahead of the exam, the better chance they will have of achieving a good score.

Croydon High School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Pass Marks and Target Scores

Potentially resembling CEM Select, the Croydon High School 11+ adaptive test is highly time pressured and students are not expected to answer all the questions.

In terms of pass marks, 60%+ is considered an excellent score and 50%+ is considered a very good score in our CEM Select Practice Tests. Whilst there are no guarantees, this has historically been a fairly strong indicator that your child should do well in the Croydon High 11+ exam.

Don’t worry if your child is not scoring well in our practice tests from the outset. With targeted practice and focus, it’s possible to make big improvements in a short amount of time!
