Table of Contents
Cokethorpe School is an independent co-educational school in Hardwick, West Oxfordshire, founded in 1957 by Francis Brown. The school occupies 150 acres of parkland and has an early 18th-century Grade II listed Queen Anne style country house at its heart.
The campus includes a number of rugby/football pitches along with the recently built astro pitches. Thus, the school has an outstanding sporting tradition with students playing national age-group rugby and women’s hockey. Aside from having numerous representatives in both regional and Oxfordshire rugby, football, cricket, hockey, athletics and tennis teams, the school has a reputation as a premier kayaking school.
In the First and Second Forms, the curriculum follows the Cokethorpe Diploma programme which delivers a broad range of subjects through cross-curricular links that focus on developing skills and learning habits required for the exam years ahead.
The provision of pastoral care is one of the school’s great strengths which evolved from its communal and family-focused ethos.
The House system ensures that pupils are in small groups, under the watchful eye of their Housemistress and tutors, who help children adjust to their new environment and maintain consistent academic progression. Pupils remain associated with their House for the duration of their time at Cokethorpe and beyond.
The school’s overall philosophy is grounded on the notion of fulfilling its pupils’ ambitions by providing a liberal education in a vibrant, kind and academically challenging environment, where the individual is celebrated and empathy, courage, integrity, ambition, judgment and responsibility are encouraged.
On a wavelength with the motto Inopiam Ingenio Pensant (They make good their needs by their wit), Cokethorpe school ensures that, through the provision of academic advancement and permanent guidance, pupils act in a manner that benefits both them and others at school and beyond.
