Introduction
Christ’s Hospital is a co-educational independent day and boarding school located in the south of Horsham in West Sussex. It was founded in 1552 and received its first Royal Charter in 1553. Christ’s Hospital was envisioned as a charity school, aiming to offer children from humble backgrounds the chance of a better education.
In addition to the National Curriculum core and foundation subjects, pupils can choose from a variety of learning options, including two modern foreign languages (Spanish and German); a two-year Latin course; Art and Design Technology lessons; a creative arts programme which includes Drama, Art and Music; Critical Argument, Rhetoric & Debating (CARD) lessons and the ‘Education for Living’ programme.
Education for Living is Christ’s Hospital’s Personal and Social Education Programme, which extends throughout the School.
The broader curriculum adopted by Christ’s Hospital ensures the development of life-skills and offers an enormous range of Sport, Music, Art, Drama and Outward Bound activity. The wide range of clubs and societies for pupils to choose from includes the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Young Enterprise, chess, debating, public speaking and many more.
The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) provides memorable experiences for cadets, who get to work together as a team and develop leadership skills.
Trips and visits occur frequently at Christ’s Hospital. Recently, pupils have travelled to New York, sailed the Aegean Sea, and visited France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Locally, via the community action programme, Christ’s Hospital aims to teach children about the importance of community service through a range of activities, including working with the elderly, primary school children and those with special needs.
Other activities at Christ’s Hospital include the promotion of good educational awareness of issues with regards to online safety. Christ’s Hospital recognises that education in this area is becoming vastly important as young people are growing up in an environment where little separates the virtual world from the real world.
The school even has policies and related documents that provide a structure and framework for the school’s approach to online safety.
