Introduction
Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School (CSGS), previously known as Sidcup County School for Boys, was established in 1931. It’s a co-educational grammar school catering to students aged 11 to 18 in Bexley, London. It’s renowned for its exceptional academic performance. The school divides its students into five houses: Williams, Lester, Edlemann Townshend, and Davies. It also has a staff house for school employees.
Students generally adhere to the national curriculum. Study plans are designed to provide a comprehensive and challenging program that enhances their knowledge and comprehension. All students study mathematics, English, science, geography, etc.
CSGS highly recommends pupils engage in at least one activity outside the standard curriculum. There are more than a hundred options, ranging from fields such as athletics, performing arts, and musical pursuits, to strategic games like chess, contributing to the school’s newspaper, and youth entrepreneurship initiatives.
Chislehurst & Sidcup focuses on upholding strong teaching practices, helping students achieve their best in academic and non-academic activities, and nurturing curious, knowledgeable, creative, and well-spoken learners. It supports student leadership and positive involvement in the school and the wider community. The school also seeks to promote healthy, active, and safe lifestyles to help students become happy and self-reliant individuals.
The emphasis on academic and individual growth has resulted in notable educational accomplishments. Pupils at CSGS regularly excel in their GCSE and A-Level exams, showcasing the efficacy of the school’s educational methodology.

Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School is part of the Bexley Co-ordinated Secondary School Admissions Scheme and only students who pass the Bexley test can be considered for admission in Year 7.
The Bexley test aims to select the top academic students for entrance to the school with pass marks set by a selection panel of headteachers and officers. In order to be eligible for consideration, students need to produce test scores within the top 180 candidates. However, it should be noted that passing the Bexley 11 Plus isn’t a guarantee of a Year 7 place.
In cases where there are more eligible candidates than Year 7 places, the school uses its over-subscription criteria, prioritising students who:
- Are Looked After or have been Looked After Children
- Are amongst the highest performing students in the 11+ exam (top 180 scores)
- Have a sibling attending the school at the time of the application
- Are the sons/daughters of members of Chislehurst & Sidcup’s staff
- Live nearest to the school.

Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School 11+ exam consists of two multiple-choice papers, each lasting approximately 50 minutes.
⇒ Test 1: Verbal Skills – Comprehension, Technical English & SPAG, Verbal Reasoning
Consists of two sections ➤ The paper begins with a reading passage, followed by a series of comprehension questions. Then there are questions that test two of the following three topics: Spelling, Punctuation and Sentence Completion. A subsequent Verbal Reasoning section evaluates your child’s ability to discern rules and relationships between words and letters.
⇒ Test 2: Mathematics & Non-Verbal Reasoning (with elements of Spatial Reasoning)
Consists of two sections ➤ Section 1 covers Mathematics questions that assess students’ mathematical skills, problem-solving abilities and logical reasoning. Section 2 is broken down into multiple timed subsections that assess Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Spatial Reasoning. NVR questions test students’ ability to solve problems using visual and abstract reasoning. Spatial Reasoning tests spatial awareness, mental rotation, visualisation and problem-solving skills.
The exam is produced by GL Assessment. All questions are multiple-choice and answers should be marked in the specially provided answer booklet. Most questions will require one correct answer to be selected. Some Verbal Reasoning questions may require two answer choices to be selected. Rough paper will not be provided but your child can write on the question booklet to help them work out the answers. These workings are neither submitted nor marked.
Students will be given a separate age-standardised score for each of the three subject areas:
- Verbal Ability – Comprehension, Technical English and VR
- Numerical Ability – Mathematics
- Non-Verbal Ability – NVR and Spatial Reasoning
One total age-standardised score will then be used to decide whether your child is eligible for entry. The total score is weighted, by combining 50% of the Verbal Ability score, 25% of the Numerical Ability score and 25% of the Non-Verbal Ability score.
