Chigwell School is an independent, coeducational day and boarding school in Chigwell, Essex. It consists of a pre-prep school (ages 4-7), junior school (ages 7–11), senior school (ages 11–16) and sixth form. Chigwell School was founded in 1629, originally teaching just 16 students. It became fully coeducational in 1997.
The school encourages pupils to challenge themselves and delivers a packed curriculum. It also provides a supportive pastoral structure and children can join various extracurricular groups and clubs.
Parents are advised to apply for a Year 3 place for their child by the end of October of the year before entry. Parents/guardians can download and complete the registration form for 7+ entry via the school’s website. A non-refundable registration fee of £75 should also be paid at the time of application.
Chigwell School hosts seven plus open events in September, where no appointment is necessary. The school also offers tours to prospective parents and pupils on a normal school day. To arrange an appointment, please contact the Admissions Registrar at [email protected].
Admission to Chigwell Junior School at 7+ is based on the outcome of a
group classroom activity, an interview, a reference from the applicant’s current school and performance in the entrance tests. The interview and classroom assessment takes place in November and the written exam follows in January.
The interview will be conducted by the Head of the Junior School or a senior member of staff and will last approximately 30 minutes. Parents are seen by the interviewer for an informal chat about their son/daughter, who will then have an interview on his/her own.
The classroom session is led by Year 3 teachers and provides an informal opportunity to assess applicants.
Chigwell School 7 plus exam takes place in January. In addition, a confidential report form will be sent to parents for completion by their son or daughter’s current school. Places are offered to candidates who demonstrate the appropriate academic standards.
