Introduction
Cheltenham Ladies’ College is an independent boarding and day school for girls in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Founded in 1853, the school maintains high academic standards, both compared to the national average and within the independent sector.

Cheltenham Ladies’ College 13 Plus (13+) Admissions
After the visit, you can register your daughter with the school. She will be expected to take part in an Assessment Day at the College in the Autumn Term of Year 7. This consists of online and paper-based exams, along with group discussions and team activities.
A place will be offered on the basis of strong performance in the entrance exams and group activities, as well as upon receipt of a positive confidential reference from her current school.
The College will release results in mid-December. Successful applicants will then be able to apply for scholarships, with further written assessments taking place the following January and February.
Cheltenham Ladies’ College 13 Plus (13+) Scholarships and Bursaries
At 13+, Cheltenham Ladies’ College offers Academic, Art, Music and Sports scholarships, exhibitions and awards. They are entirely merit-based and offered on the basis of an exam, audition or other appropriate assessment.
Bursaries, also known as Beale Awards, are means-tested and may carry a discount of up to 100% of the tuition fees, depending on your financial circumstances. To apply, you will be expected to complete the Beale Award Registration Form and pay the non-refundable £50 Beale registration fee. You are strongly advised by the school to apply well in advance in order to be considered.
Cheltenham Ladies’ College 13 Plus (13+) Pre-assessment Format
The Cheltenham Ladies’ College 13+ Assessment Day process includes the following tests:
- English comprehension and writing paper
- Online Mathematics test
- Online CAT4 test
The English paper will test reading comprehension and writing skills. The school looks for students who:
– know how to use inference and deduction
– know how to make connections between different parts of a text
– know how to form paragraphs
– accurately use punctuation marks
– have a rich vocabulary, etc.
The mathematics test is computer-based. It tests mental maths skills and arithmetic, including questions on:
– addition and subtraction of decimals
– simple algebra
– operations with fractions
– symmetry and shapes
– simple ratio and proportion, etc.
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) is sat only when the candidate for entry can’t provide CAT4 scores from her current school. The exam measures developed abilities via modules testing:
– Verbal Reasoning
– Non-Verbal Reasoning
– Spatial Reasoning
– Quantitative Reasoning.
