Introduction
Caterham School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school located in Caterham, Surrey. Founded in 1811 in Lewisham to provide a boarding education for the sons of Congregational Ministers, the school moved to its current premises in 1884, opening its doors to the sons of laymen and day boys. It merged with the Eothen School for Girls to become co-educational in 1995.
Caterham School is noted as a centre for innovative and creative teaching and learning. Pupils study a core curriculum comprising mathematics, English, science, Humanities and modern foreign languages. They also have lessons in art, 3D Design and Computer Science, PE and Games, as well as PSHEE, citizenship, study skills and introduction to iPads.
Central to school life are initiatives such as School Council, Digital Council, Study Buddy and proactive pastoral discussion groups, enabling pupils to find their voice and develop skills that will last a lifetime.
In the scope of the PSHEE programme, the teaching staff cover a wide range of topics, characterised by five elements: Health, Readiness, Awareness, Community and Spirituality.
The House system provides the perfect terrain for the formation of firm friendships across all age groups, as well as for internal competitions. Within each House, the range of activities ensures that there is always something of interest to pupils, from House Debating to House Music, Drama and Sport.
The school’s Health Centre promotes physical and emotional health as well as the wellbeing of pupils in a nurturing environment, which is a ‘home from home’ when pupils are unwell. The centre’s staff works in partnership with parents and pastoral staff and includes a School Doctor and nurses, registered with the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC).
By teaching pupils to be emotionally literate and emphasizing the importance of looking after each other within the thriving community, the school tends to significantly ease their transition into adulthood. The provision of high-class education coupled with a caring and nurturing environment enables pupils at Caterham School to become independent and critical thinkers, with a preference for truthfulness over any other feature, embodying the school’s motto Veritas sine timore (Truth without Fear).
