Introduction

Bryanston School is a co-educational independent day and boarding school located next to the village of Bryanston in Dorset. It was founded in 1928 and now resides in a neo-Georgian style country house, designed and built in 1889-94 by Richard Norman Shaw, the champion of a renewed academic tradition.

Known as a liberal and artistic school that incorporates the ideas of the Dalton Plan, Bryanston School stands firmly on the philosophy of optimising learning for each child so that they will grow into resourceful, independent and creative individuals in whatever path they choose to follow.

The curriculum comprises the core subjects plus art, computer science, Classics, design and technology, drama, geography, music, modern foreign languages, PE and PSRE.

Within the extra-curricular programme, activities that are regularly taken up include Archeology, Film (film, film crew and film making), Football Power League, French Newsletter, Game Development in Unity, German Film Club, Green Power Challenge, Horse Riding, House Challenge and many more.

The school also offers the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), a two-year assessed programme for pupils aged 16 to 19 that provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education, employment or an apprenticeship. Recognised by many universities worldwide, it comprises three core elements: Theory of Knowledge (ToK), which reflects on the nature of knowledge and  how we know what we know; The Extended Essay (EE), which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), which is a project-based program delegated in relation to all three aspects.

Christian inspiration and ideals are central to the Bryanston ethos, however, the school welcomes pupils of other faiths too, as well as those who don’t have a religious affiliation.

Accordingly, Pastoral care is for the benefit of all. The resident school Chaplain coordinates the liturgical life of the school within church and chapel (church attendance is completely voluntary). Roman Catholics (also on a voluntary basis) can attend Mass in Blandford. All throughout the year, the local Rabbi arrives at the campus to minister to those of the Jewish faith. The school maintains links with the Islamic Cultural Centre in Bournemouth, as well.

In this way, Bryanston School balances between the new and the old, in full alignment with its motto Et nova et vetera.
