The Discovery Paper is a newly introduced and distinctive component of the Year 7 Entrance Test for Reading School. Unlike traditional English papers, it assesses a student’s ability to think creatively, solve problems logically and express original ideas with clarity, precision and purpose.

The 11+ entrance exams for Reading School are set by FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise Ltd). The test will consist of four different papers, which aim to assess natural ability, problem solving and creativity:

How is the Reading School Year 7 Entrance Test different from other grammar school 11+ entrance exams?

A majority of UK grammar schools use 11+ papers set by GL Assessment. The GL Assessment papers are multiple choice and can include Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and/or Non-Verbal Reasoning.

The Reading School Year 7 Entrance Test is sect by FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise Ltd). This year the test may include questions on any of the following KS2 subjects: Art & Design, Languages, Computing, Mathematics, Design & Technology, Music, English, Physical Education, Geography, Science and History. There is also a paper requiring a creative written response.

What is FSCE?

FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise Ltd) is a subsidiary of Reading School. They set the Year 7 Entrance Test for Reading School.

They also set multiple-choice and free-response question papers in English, Maths and Creative Writing for an increasing number of other UK grammar schools, including:

What subjects are covered in this pack?

This pack includes 10 tests replicating the creativity tasks in Discovery Paper. The tasks reflect the full variety of question formats likely to come up in the paper, including imaginative stories, descriptive recounts, poems, instructional texts and responses to picture prompts.

The style of the questions may be unfamiliar to students, as they are very different to those encountered in traditional English papers, but they should be able to answer them by applying their imagination, lateral thinking and problem-solving skills.
