Box Hill School is an independent co-educational boarding and day school situated in the village of Mickleham near Dorking, Surrey. Founded in 1959 by Roy McComish, a housemaster and art master at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, the school is one of the founding members of the international Round Square association.
The Year 7 curriculum consists of art, biology, chemistry, physics, music, computer science, design technology, drama, English, French, Spanish, geography, history, mathematics, physical education and PSHE.
The enrichment programme covers a wide range of activities, from Netball, Horse Riding and Football to Gardening, Origami and Rock Band.

Open Events for Box Hill School 11 Plus (11+) Entry
Open Mornings and Open Evenings include talks from the Headmaster, pupil-led tours of the school and the chance to speak to academic and admissions staff, as well as current pupils and members of the Parents’ Association. There will also be various activities and displays of interest to prospective pupils, with refreshments available throughout.
School at Work Days provide families with the opportunity to look around the school during a normal working day via a pupil-led tour. Meetings with the Headmaster, other senior staff and teachers are also included. Booking is made via the school’s website.
Box Hill School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
To register for Year 7 entry, you should complete and return the Registration Form available on the website. You will be expected to pay a non-refundable registration fee of £100.
The Registration Form should be accompanied with your child’s passport-sized photograph and a copy of their full school report. Invitations to attend Assessment Days will be sent out during the Autumn Term preceding admission. After registration, a reference from your child’s current school will also be requested.
The school awards Academic, Art, Music, Drama and Sports Scholarships. Academic scholarships are available to all registered candidates based on exceptional attainment in the entrance tests. Separate applications for academic scholarships are therefore not required.
Bursaries are awarded at the discretion of the Governors, the Headmaster and the Bursar to families who can’t afford the fees. To apply for a bursary, you will be required to complete an application form which seeks to establish the financial circumstances of the household. The Box Hill School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following papers:
- English (45 mins)
- Mathematics (45 mins)
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
