Introduction
Box Hill School is an independent co-educational boarding and day school situated in the village of Mickleham near Dorking, Surrey. Founded in 1959 by Roy McComish, a housemaster and art master at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, the school is one of the founding members of the international Round Square association.
The Year 7 curriculum consists of art, biology, chemistry, physics, music, computer science, design technology, drama, English, French, Spanish, geography, history, mathematics, physical education and PSHE.
The enrichment programme covers a wide range of activities, from Netball, Horse Riding and Football to Gardening, Origami and Rock Band.
Through the provision of a holistic education, the school enables its pupils to find their identity, meaning and purpose in life. Although academic achievement is considered immensely important at Box Hill, equal emphasis is put on art, dance, drama, charity work and adventurous pursuits.

Box Hill School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
To register your child for Year 7 entry, you should complete and return the registration form available on the website. In order for the application to be processed, you should pay a non-refundable registration fee of £100.
The form should be accompanied by your child’s passport-sized photograph and a copy of their full school report. Invitations to attend Assessment Days (exams and interviews) will be sent out during the Autumn Term preceding admission. After registration, a reference from your child’s current school will also be requested.
Box Hill School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
The school awards Academic, Art, Music, Drama and Sports Scholarships. Academic scholarships are available to all registered candidates based on exceptional attainment in the entrance tests. Separate applications for these are therefore not required. Non-academic awards are valued at up to 10% of fees and applications for them are made separately. Click here to learn more.
Bursaries are awarded at the discretion of the Governors, the Head and the Bursar to families who can’t afford the fees. To apply for a bursary, you will be required to complete an application form which seeks to establish the financial circumstances of the household. The form should be submitted along with supporting documentation.

Box Hill School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Box Hill School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following papers:
- English (45 mins)
- Mathematics (60 mins)
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
