Bootham School 11 Plus (11+) Entrance Exam Information – Key Details
Table of Contents
Bootham School is an independent Quaker boarding school in the city of York in North Yorkshire. It educates boys and girls between 3–19 in a building originally built in 1804 for Sir Richard Vanden Bempde Johnstone. The school was founded by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and it opened its doors to students in 1823.
In accordance with the Quaker principles and practices, the school fully invests in providing children with a thriving community where each of them will develop ‘that of God’ in themselves and in other people. Bootham School aims to instill in pupils the quality of aspiration, the habit of hard work and overall high standards of personal conduct in all aspects of work and relationships.
The stimulating, fair and supportive learning environment is complemented by a rich curriculum, comprising the core subjects plus geography, history, classics, religious education, music, design and technology, IT (including 3–D in Photoshop), PE, art, drama, Health and the Environment and Thinking Skills. Students study French, German and Spanish in the first half of Year 7.
The variety of co-curricular activities includes LAMDA classes, where, through improvisation, games, drama exercises and text exploration, students develop performance skills ahead of the LAMDA graded exams.
The music department is set in a new, purpose-built Arts’ Centre, comprising 12 teaching spaces (many equipped with a new piano), a performance or rehearsal room with staff room, offices, a library and storage space.
Recently, the Senior Choir reached the televised finals of the BBC Songs of Praise Choir of the Year Competition. Many of the Bootham School students secured a spot at Oxford or Cambridge and Music Conservatoires.
The Pastoral Care programme includes a Health Centre (The Lodge) which meets the needs of students and staff who require medical attention, health education or simply a quiet place to calm their mind. The Lodge’s staff includes a Nurse Manager, a health care assistant, a Counsellor and School Doctor.
The school staff’s profound care of students’ overall well-being, delegated within an environment that enables both their intellectual and physical development, illustrates the ethereal unity which exists on campus and is in full alignment with the school’s motto Membra Sumus Corporis Magni (We are members of a greater body).
