Introduction
Blundell’s School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school located in Tiverton, Devon. It was founded in 1604 upon the will of Peter Blundell, one of the richest men in England at the time. Until the 19th century, it was known by the name Tiverton Grammar School.
The Good Schools Guide describes Blundell’s as a “distinguished rural school of ancient lineage”, whilst recent GCSE results are a testament of Blundellians’ outstanding academic performance, with 20% of all grades awarded a 9 and an incredible 56% of all grades being at 7, 8 or 9.
The Senior School curriculum comprises art, business & economics, classics, computing, design & technology, drama, film studies, geography, history, learning & pupil support, modern languages, music, PE, politics, PSHE, religious studies and the core subjects.
The school’s aim is to develop depth and breadth of character, whilst encouraging resilience, optimism, self-control and generosity among pupils in the scope of the school’s rich Christian ethos. Thus, a sense of social responsibility through service to the community is instilled in pupils from the very start.
Blundell’s is also noted for its boarding ethos and the strength of its house system. A Year 7 pupil will start their Blundell’s journey in School House, a specialist house for 11-13 year olds, then progress to one of the five middle year houses where new boarders will join in Years 9 and 12. Such a structure allows the houses to focus on a particular age range, with experienced senior teachers closely monitoring the different stages of the boys’ and girls’ development.
Senior teachers are supported by tutors, the school Chaplain, the sanatorium staff and an independent school counsellor. Through extensive pastoral care, Blundellians develop and grow within a secure environment. The atmosphere of inclusion suggests that both pupils and staff are part of a unity of inexplicable value.
Activities that provide relaxation and joy after the hours spent in the classroom include sport, debating, music competitions, plays and Christmas entertainments. In this way, firm friendships across year groups are maintained, whilst pupils’ wider personal development is secured by the firm relationship formed with their houseparents and tutors.
