Introduction
Birkenhead School is an independent co-educational school located in Oxton, Wirral. Founded in 1860, the school became fully co-educational in 2008. In 2010, the first female chaplain was appointed, whilst 5 years later, the school got its first female Head.
Birkenhead fosters intellectual curiosity, preparing students to have an impact in life through a broad and balanced curriculum that goes beyond statutory requirements. In Years 9 and 10, Seniors take classes in art, geography, music, design & technology, history, PE, games, drama IT & coding, religious education, science, mathematics, Latin, English, French and Spanish.
The use of IT is fully integrated into the model of teaching. The school’s Bring Your Own Device programme ensures that students have the ability to access resources via their own personal device (laptop or tablet).
PSHE is taught at Birkenhead with the aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand and manage complex situations. The subject lessons are delivered by form teachers, the School Chaplain and the School Nurse.
Topics covered through the PSHE programme include Confidence and self-esteem, Mental Health, Physical Health, Equality & Human Rights, Global Issues, Sex & Relationship Education and Study Skills.
In accordance with the extensive and ambitious extra-curricular programme, seniors regularly go on trips abroad. The most recent ones include visits to South Africa, France, the NASA HQ in Houston, Texas and CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.
The school takes its responsibility to educate very seriously. Considerable staff time is therefore invested in the Beyond the Curriculum programme which covers a wide range of topics including Public Speaking, Active Listening, First Impressions, Etiquette, Charity, the Environment and Cookery.
Besides maintaining a lively community that fosters a happy and caring environment for the personal and academic growth of its students, Birkenhead School aims to ensure that students partake in activities that make a difference to the local community as well. Through such activities, students learn about the importance of giving back to those less fortunate whilst developing strong, altruistic qualities that guide them as they progress into adulthood.
