Table of Contents
Bedales School is a co-educational, boarding and day independent school, located in the village of Steep, near Petersfield in Hampshire. Founded in 1893 by John Haden Badley, the school was founded as a reaction to the limitations of conventional Victorian schools.
Along with playing fields, orchards, a woodland, a pasture and a nature reserve, the campus also comprises two Grade 1 listed arts and crafts buildings designed by Ernest Gimson, and three contemporary award-winning buildings: the Olivier Theatre, the Art and Design Building designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and the Orchard Building by Walters & Cohen.
As stimulating as it is picturesque, the school offers a broad curriculum in Year 7. It includes creative studies, drama, English, geography, history, ICT, Latin, maths, French, Spanish and German tasters, music, outdoor work, PSHE, religious education, science and sport.
The small pupils’ groups at the Prep school (Dunhurst) ensure that the tutor looks after each student’s pastoral and academic needs through an individualised approach. The strong pastoral support system enables the children to become independent in managing their work while being committed to a range of academic and extracurricular activities.
Pupils have a voice in the running of the school via the School Council, which comprises representatives from all age groups. Furthermore, every pupil is expected to contribute to the Community Service programme, and through helping others both within and beyond the school, they are prepared for adulthood as independent thinkers with enquiring minds.
Through the Outdoor Work activities at Dunhurst, each pupil embodies the spirit and ideals of the school’s founder, John Haden Badley, who advocated for appreciation and understanding of the outdoor environment and all that can be achieved there.
Respect for the natural world as a whole is highly encouraged within the broad spectrum of physical, creative and rewarding tasks. Outdoor Work offers multi-dimensional learning in accordance with growth mindset principles: touching, making, doing, building, sensing, feeling, tasting and moving.
Education at Bedales Prep, built upon theoretical foundations, is in full alignment with the school’s motto: Work of Each for Weal of All.
