Introduction

 

There are currently 164 state-funded fully selective schools or grammar schools in the UK. Of those 164, there are ten schools that stood out last year as being the top for GCSE results. We’ve compiled a list of the top grammar schools in the UK based on The Telegraph’s research of the top schools for GCSE results.

 


 

 

King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford 11 plus (11+) exam details

 

Established in 1551, King Edward VI Grammar School, also known as KEGS, is a grammar school with academy status located in Chelmsford, Essex. It educates students aged between 11 and 18, with Years 7-11 made up of male students. Years 12 and 13 (sixth form) are co-educational. The school places emphasis on traditional courtesy, as well as personal conduct and respect while embracing modern educational research.

 

Did you know?

The Financial Times rated KEGS as the most successful state school at GCE advanced level in the period 1993-1998. The school has also been named Sunday Times School of the Year. [1]

HBS 11 Plus (11+) assessment

 

A grammar school with academy status, The Henrietta Barnett School was established in 1911. HBS is exclusively for girls and is located in the Hampstead Garden Suburb in London. It’s consistently ranked one of the best state schools in the country for academic performance and frequently tops the school league tables.

 

Did you know?

The school’s founder, Dame Henrietta Barnett, believed that good education should be as accessible to poor girls as it was to girls from privileged backgrounds. Today, HBS features extensive facilities and is among the top ten schools for Russell Group applications. [2]

is Stroud High School a good school

 

Founded in 1904, Gloucestershire-based Stroud High School (SHS) is a girls-only grammar school, catering for pupils aged 11-18. In July 2011, it became an academy and, since then, its buildings have undergone a large programme of modernisation. The school offers a range of extracurricular clubs and societies, catering for interests in music, academia and sport.

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls 11 plus (11+) entry

 

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls (AGGS) was founded in 1910 as part of the 1902 Education act. An all-girls school, Altrincham is the largest of all the single-sex grammar schools in England, with approximately 1,250 students. It is also one of the highest achieving grammars in the country, boasting a 100% GCSE pass rate in recent years.

is Dr Challoner’s High School a good school

 

Established in 1962, Dr Challoner’s High School, also known as DCHS for short, is a girls’ grammar school for pupils aged between 11 and 18. Located in Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, it was formed when it split from Dr Challoner’s Grammar School, which became an all-boys school.

is Kendrick Girls’ Grammar School a good school

 

Founded in 1877, Kendrick Girls’ Grammar School is a selective grammar school in Reading, Berkshire. The school gained academy status in 2010 and is frequently over-subscribed, as competition for entry is very high. It currently caters for approximately 690 pupils, providing top-quality academic and non-academic education.

 

Did you know?

To maximise girls’ environmental awareness, the school has set up an Eco-Committee, consisting of one or two representatives from each form, elected by their peers. Its initiatives include reducing the landfill waste and increasing the recycling done within the school. For its efforts, Kendrick Grammar was awarded a Bronze Eco-Schools Award. [6]

Beaconsfield High School, known locally as Becky High, is a girls’ grammar school based in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. With approximately 1,100 students at the school, and around 180 Year 7 places available, competition for entry is high.

Becky High closely collaborates with Kachieng Secondary School in Kenya, organising fundraisers to assist the school, especially after it was recently damaged by a fire. Founded in 1938, Nonsuch High School for Girls is an all-girls grammar school situated in Cheam, the London borough of Sutton. An academy school, Nonsuch has also gained specialist science and language school status.

Founded in 1909, Colchester County High School for Girls is a selective girls’ grammar school in Colchester, Essex. With consistently high results in the school league tables, it is ranked 2nd in the Telegraph’s list of the best grammar schools in the UK.  Admission to Colchester County is by an academic selection test in Years 7 and 12.
