Introduction
St John’s Beaumont is a day and boarding preparatory school for children aged 3-13. It is a Roman Catholic Jesuit school, meaning faith is an important part of school life. Although children of other faiths, and those without a faith, are warmly invited to apply to the school, it should be noted that attendance at morning assemblies and other religious services is not optional.
In 2023, St John’s Beaumont opened its doors to girls for the first time, with girls joining the Pre-Prep School. In 2024, girls will be able to join the Middle School by applying for a place in Year 3. This is an exciting chapter for the school, given that it had previously educated only boys for over a century! By 2029/30, the school will be fully co-educational. However, girls, for the foreseeable future, will not be able to board.
Academically, St John’s Beaumont aims for each pupil to reach their full potential. Teaching is seen not simply as being about imparting knowledge but also as being about creating independent learners, who can think critically and show resilience. The broad and balanced curriculum helps to achieve this goal. Furthermore, St John’s Beaumont, by the end of 2024, will have completed a two-year professional development programme, making it a High Performance School.
The co-curricular programme at St John’s Beaumont is impressive. The school recognises that some pupils’ strengths lie outside of the classroom, and these children must have the opportunity to flourish. Besides, all pupils benefit from the chance to develop existing skills and discover new talents, forging strong friendships as they do so. Available activities include climbing, coding, art and chess.
Pastoral care is exemplary at St John’s Beaumont. All members of staff are proactive when it comes to monitoring and supporting pupils, leading to a safe and secure environment in which pupils can thrive. Pupil Parliament and pupil wellbeing surveys help give pupils a voice, and boarding parents provide care to boarders, ensuring they develop strategies to cope with any homesickness they may experience.

Year 3 and Year 7 are standard entry points; however, you can apply for entry to Year 4, 5, 6 or 8 if a place is available.
The first step of the admissions process is to visit the school so you can explore the facilities and experience the incrediblele learning environment. You can arrange an individual visit and/or attend an Open Day by filling out the online booking form in the first instance.
If you decide St John’s Beaumont is a good fit for your child after visiting, you should then complete the online registration form. You will be required to pay a £100 non-refundable registration fee (£125 for international students).
Once the school has received your child’s registration form, your family will be invited to the school for an interview with the Headteacher. Part of the purpose of this is to help St John’s decide if your child will be able to cope with the school’s challenging curriculum and be keen to engage fully with all it has to offer.
Your child may then be invited to attend a taster and assessment day, during which they will sit a literacy test and a numeracy test. The results of these tests will enable the school to see the level your child is at and whether they feel they will be able to help your child reach their full potential. Your child will also spend time with their peer group, enabling the school to assess their social skills and see how adaptable and resilient they are.
In addition to this, a report and reference from your child’s current school will be looked at carefully as part of the admissions process.
Should your child be offered a place, and you decide to accept it, you will need to fill out the acceptance form and pay a £1,000 acceptance fee, which is refunded when your child finishes their education at St John’s. For international pupils, the acceptance fee is a term’s fees. You need to fill out the form and pay the fee within two weeks of receiving the offer.
Please note that priority is given to candidates who are baptised Roman Catholic.
St John’s Beaumont: Scholarships and Bursaries
St John’s Beaumont does not offer any scholarships to pupils but does offer fee-assisted places and bursaries to pupils in Years 4-8. For financial reasons, only a limited number of fee-assisted places and bursaries are available. They are all means-tested, meaning you would need to provide detailed information about your financial circumstances to be considered for such help.
St John’s Beaumont: Entrance Assessments for Years 3-8
The entrance assessment will consist of the following:
- A standardised literacy test: this test will assess your child’s spelling, punctuation, grammar and reading comprehension. There is also likely to be a creative writing exercise.
- A standardised numeracy test: you can expect this test to assess your child’s numerical reasoning and to include questions that cover the relevant National Curriculum stage. Often in entrance assessments, some more challenging questions will also be asked.
- An interview: this is a way to assess your child’s listening and social skills and to see how enthusiastic they are about learning.
- Activities with their peer group: this enables the school to further assess your child’s social skills, as well as their willingness to step out of their comfort zone, their flexibility and their potential leadership skills.
