Introduction

King Henry VIII School is an independent school for boys and girls aged 3 to 18 and is part of the Coventry School Foundation, an educational charity. The school was founded in 1545, following an instruction from King Henry VIII to Sir John Hales. It has been at its current location since 1885.

In the Junior School, pupils study a wide range of subjects, including maths, English, history, geography, languages, science, drama, computing and religious education. Pupils are encouraged to be curious learners who develop a lifelong love of learning.

There are plenty of extra-curricular clubs available in the Junior School, enabling pupils to enhance their existing talents and discover new skills while having fun and making new friends. Sport and music are popular features of the extra-curricular programme.

Pupil wellbeing is prioritised at King Henry VIII School. Every staff member is committed to providing the best possible care to all pupils. Additionally, pupils are also on hand to help. Trained anti-bullying ambassadors are available at lunchtimes, as are prefects, and older pupils are assigned to form groups to act as peer support assistants.

Your child will then be invited to King Henry VIII School to sit maths, reading and writing assessments. They will also be able to spend time with their prospective class and teachers.

The headteacher will let you know verbally if your child has secured a place. You will also receive written confirmation.

To accept an offer, you must fill in the acceptance form and pay the £540 acceptance fee.

Scholarships and bursaries are not available for Year 4 entry.

King Henry VIII School: Entrance Assessments for Year 4 Entry

Your child will sit three assessments for entry to Year 4:

  • A maths assessment
  • A reading assessment
  • A writing assessment

The maths assessment will test your child’s arithmetic and problem-solving skills.

The reading assessment will require your child to read aloud and complete a comprehension task, testing their reading fluency and ability to make sense of what they read.

The writing assessment will evaluate your child’s creative writing skills. They will be expected to, amongst other things, write in full sentences, keep the tense consistent, use punctuation correctly and form letters neatly and consistently.

We know that the thought of entrance assessments can feel daunting. It can be hard to know how to prepare for them, which is why we have compiled some top tips for you in the next section.

Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the King Henry VIII School Year 4 Entrance Assessments

The following tips will help your child have a positive and successful preparation period for entry to Year 4 at King Henry VIII School:

  • Teach your child to adopt a growth mindset: If your child has a growth mindset, they will understand that their abilities will improve with time and effort. They will see mistakes as opportunities to learn and setbacks as hurdles to overcome, developing resilience and determination.
  • Promote daily reading: Getting into the habit of reading every day is hugely beneficial for many reasons. Reading will enhance your child’s reading comprehension, as well as their spelling, punctuation and grammar. It will also spark their imagination, essential for creative writing. Get them to read aloud to you, reminding them to use expression and to take a breath at the end of each sentence.
  • Encourage creative writing practice: Give your child prompts for creative writing, such as a title or a picture. Get them to read their piece aloud when they have finished so that you can then discuss ideas on how to make it even better. Always praise them for what they have done well.
  • Practise arithmetic and times tables: You can ask your child quick maths questions when you’re out and about together, using everyday situations such as counting change and adding prices to keep the practice light, fun and regular.
  • Nurture wellbeing: Make sure your child has time to relax, play and recharge. A balanced routine with plenty of sleep, outdoor time and moments to unwind will help them stay calm, focused and confident as they prepare for the assessments. Keep study sessions short, as most children can only focus effectively for 2-3 minutes per year of their age.
  • Use 8+ exam resources: Using our 8+ exam resources will help ensure that your child becomes familiar with the types of questions they may face and can practise their skills in a calm, structured way before the assessment.
