Introduction
Withington Girls’ School is an independent day school for girls in Fallowfield, Manchester. It was founded in 1890 by a group of eminent Manchester families who wanted their daughters to have the same educational opportunities as their sons. [1]
In the Junior School, girls study English and Maths, along with science, DT, art, geography, history, ICT, languages, music, PE, PSHCE and religious studies. The school aims to meet their interests beyond the classroom via a large number of extracurricular clubs including choir, orchestra, gymnastics, eco-warriors, dance, pottery, tennis, Yoga, fencing and drama.
Community service pursuits are strongly encouraged as girls are given the opportunity to ‘project manage’ their own fundraising activities and get involved in nationwide charity appeals such as Children in Need and Comic Relief.
The school’s pastoral care system is directly involved in identifying the special interests, abilities and needs of every girl on campus. The Form Teachers maintain permanent communication with parents and actively invest in making sure that students are responsible and respectful to those around them.
Small class sizes and the purpose-built area at Withington Girls’ ensure positive academic outcomes and memorable educational experiences. Furthermore, via trips out of school and lectures from visitors coming in, girls are taught to be curious, embrace challenges and develop confidence early on, growing in resilience and character throughout their time at the school.
