Introduction
North London Grammar School (NLGS) is a co-educational independent school for pupils aged 7-18, with boarding available for boys only from Year 7. The school benefits from being in the cosmopolitan city of London and welcomes pupils from a diverse range of backgrounds. Being a not-for-profit school, the fees are low, making NLGS a viable option for more families. Please note that pupils aged 16-18 are international students who complete a University Foundation Programme, not A Level students.
The academic curriculum at NLGS is broad, and small class sizes mean teachers get to know their pupils well. Appropriately challenging work is given to stretch more able students, and less able pupils are given additional support. Regular testing means staff can quickly identify any topics that need to be revisited to plug gaps in knowledge and correct any misconceptions.
In the Junior School (Years 3-6), before and after-school care is available. Breakfast is provided before school, and various activities and snacks are provided after school. For working parents and carers, this can be invaluable.
Pastoral care is excellent at NLGS. Mentors work with pupils who need extra support for a variety of reasons, such as emotional difficulties, bereavement and low self-esteem. School community members are expected to treat each other with kindness and respect, creating a happy environment where pupils can thrive.

North London Grammar School: 7 Plus (7+)/Year 3 Entrance Exam Information
The entrance exam for Year 3 comprises the following:
CAT4
The CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) covers four areas:
- Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems that use words.
- Quantitative reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems that use numbers.
- Non-verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems by analysing visual information.
- Spatial reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems that use shapes and space.
You can expect your child to take Level X of the CAT4, as this is the level recommended for Year 3 entry.
Maths Paper
The maths paper will be appropriate for your child’s age when they sit the entrance exam. It is likely to have questions involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, measurement and shapes.
English Paper
The English paper will also be suitable for your child’s age when they sit the entrance exam. It is likely to assess your child’s reading ability using a comprehension task. It will also likely test their writing skills using a creative writing task.
Please do not worry about the entrance exam; there is plenty you can do to help ensure your child is fully prepared.
Preparing for the Year 3 Entrance Exam to North London Grammar School
We have the following top tips:
- Encourage your child to read and read with them.
Reading will help expand your child’s vocabulary, which will be helpful for the verbal reasoning questions in the CAT4 and the English paper. Also, strong reading skills are crucial for success in all your child’s educational endeavours. They could even talk about a book they have enjoyed in their interview.
- Ensure your child spends time on activities they enjoy.
Leading a balanced life focused not solely on education is good for your child’s mental health. They need time to relax, have fun and engage in enjoyable activities.
- Go through your child’s schoolwork with them.
Understanding the topics they have covered at school is vital for them to shine in the entrance exam. Keep revision sessions short, as young children can only concentrate for around 20 minutes at a time.
- Ensure your child eats healthily and gets plenty of sleep and exercise.
A healthy diet, sufficient sleep and plenty of exercise will help your child’s cognitive development and promote good mental health.
- Praise your child for their achievements.
Please praise your child for their successes to create a positive environment that will keep them motivated. Promote a growth mindset, which is the belief that skills can be improved with time and effort.
- Use targeted resources and practice tests.
Using targeted resources and practice tests to familiarise your child with what to expect in the entrance exam will reduce nerves and build confidence. Practice tests will get your child used to working under time pressure and familiarise them with the types of questions they must answer. Gaps in their knowledge and their weaker areas can be identified, too. Study sessions can then focus on rectifying any issues.
